After posting an add in the classified adds of YT I received an email which was deleted by the virus detection service I have.

It is too bad that YT post your email address so readily when you post an add, they should have a setup like e-bay that does not allow just anybody in the whole world to see your email address so easy. I do not know if it is proper to post the email address of the virus sender, but I will if it is legal and others would like to be forwarned about this problem.

I would like to take the time to thank Kim for the excellent job she is doing. I know it is a real pain when something like the virus occurs, but in my opinion, to keep this a free site, with access to and by everyone, I applaud her efforts. Yes, there are some out there that take advantage of us trusting souls, but by and large, they are a very small minority. Thanks Kim for such a great site. Bob D. (La)

Tom,

Don't post the address of the "sender". Guaranteed that is NOT who sent it.

SMTP, the mail protocol of the interenet, was developed in simpler times. One of these days we will have mail transport agents that are secure and don't allow address spoofing. In the meantime, we all will have to live with the criminals and jerks that make their living causing the rest of us aggravation.

I'm in the process of implementing a feature in the classifieds (photo and regular) where the email address is not shown (no blue link to it). Instead, when you click on the email link you will enter your message into a YT "contact seller" form which will then be sent by the server to the email address after passing through a filter. The problem is the filter - I have to study this so that that spammers, foreign cashier check thiefs, and virus senders can be detected and deleted - but not valid interested parties.

Simply passing everything through a program though will stop 95% of the trash - much of this is generated by automatic program robots that scan the internet looking for email addresses. I'll probably implement that right away as "Phase 1" and add the filter in "Phase 2".

As always, comments and ideas are welcome. You can post them here or use this form.

Thanks everyone!
Kim

I have had a "disposable" Hotmail address for three years, now, with very few problems. When I got it, it was to avoid using my email address at my ISP for forums that post the address openly. I figured when the spam and other problems got too bad I'd just change it. Well, there have been almost no problems, apparently due to the dilligent anti-spam software Hotamil uses. I would suggest to anyone posting on these Forums, get a Hotamail email address, and keep your email address at your local ISP off the 'net.

Many times the viruses fake the 'from' address, so posting the address could be nlaming the wrong person. Also, if a person doesn't know they have one - why be mad at that person?

Go to Yahoo or Hotmail & get a free email address & use that for the 'exposed' address. If the spam & viruses get too bad, shut it down & start a new one. They are free.

That would actually help you, no point in getting mad at spoofed addresses. :)

I've had the same problem, Tom. Norton has caught many viri in the past week or so...since I put a couple of items for sale in the classifieds and photo ads.
Never had that before.

About a year ago, someone sent me an email warning me to stop sending him spam. I have never, ever generated spam or a virus. I became suspicious. So I went and got some anti-spyware software and put it on my computer. I found that in my internet travels, I had inadvertantly picked up a couple of programs that hid themselves on my computer and used my email to send out crap to other people. My anti-virus program could not detect these programs, as they were not true viruses. I highly recommend to anyone to get some form of anti-spyware software and install it. You never know what you may have accidentally downloaded.

Over the last few months I have gotten several non-delivery notices stating that email I sent to someome had a virus and was not delivered. I never sent these emails, so I guess there is/was some program sending them out even when the computer is off. I use Ad-aware occasionaly and wonder if it detects this sort of 'crime'?

Spyware blaster from Javacools is a very good program. It actually prevents spyware from been installed on your computer, as opposed to detecting it and have you remove it like some other programmes do. (e.g. Ad aware)

I know that the person who sent the virus may not even know it.(it happened to someone I know once), so I wouldn't post the address. I do not know how you could send a email with a phony address though, is that possibly? I am a dummy when it comes to this computer stuff (lot of other things too).
I guess since I am a dummy, I don't know who Kim is. I don't get here as often as I would like. Could someone fill me in?

Tom, this is what they mean when they say that a virus is "spoofing" an address. Most virus do this. Rest assured that some where, some one is getting a virus supposedly from you. Since yout address is know to it.

Almost all viruses now adays use email spoofing. So whoever it says its from, its usually forged.

You at least should let Kim know so she can handle it from her end and stop it.
