Buying a tractor from whom?????

I'm interested in purchasing a standard model tractor such as 990 Oliver, 830 JD, or 660 IH.
I have noticed that many of these types of tractors are sold by a small number of independent sellers. When I contact them they never seem to know the history of the tractor or at least they will not convey it to me. I would rather buy from a farmer that was wanting to sell his tractor and could tell me about it. I would rather give the farmer a little extra and cut out the middle man. I have been warned by some that buying from a tractor jockey is a gamble. Where and how would one go about buying a good sound standard tractor? Thanks for your help.

GHH: You don't say where you're from. There is a weekly farm newspaper puplished in the midwest that has many classified adds for tractors and implements. It covers WI, IN, IL, IA, MN, etc. You can access these adds at wisfarmer.com

I know what you mean. I have been collecting for over 30 years, and I have found it has been more rewarding to buy a tractor from a person who has owned it for awhile and maybe knows some history about it. I like the old ones, built in the teens and twenties, and those models are getting very hard to find, especially in the hands of old time collectors. In the past I have sold an 830 that I bought in 1970 and farmed with it for 10 years, and then sold it to satisfy my addiction for old iron. I still farm with a 730 D JD, and it will be for sale some year. If you find a tractor that you are interested in and it isn't for sale, be patient, it will come up for sale sometime, even if you have to wait, I waited 10 years for one that I wanted to come up for sale.

If you want to get one from a farmer I would suggest checking out the auction listings in the paper. Most times the farmer will be present and most tend to be pretty truthful about the equipment up for sale.

Your going to have a hard time finding a farmer
that uses those old tractors anymore. Some do,
but they won't sell,other farmers own them,but
don't use them, maybe pull a wagon or run an auger, but there to old and outdated. Most are
on the Jockey/farmer Jockey circuit.
