Hi guys,

I know that this question is not strictly about tractors, but, I thought, if anyone could answer it it would be the guys in the Tractor talk forum!!

Here it is- In a vehicle with an automatic tranny, when you come to a stop should you leave 'er in drive or shift to neutral for the wait?

I have had mixed opinions on this, and I just wanted to set it straght before i wreck my truck.

thanks, Pawel

I always leave it in gear at the lights or stop sign. I have seen people put their car in neutral at a stop, wait till traffic just in front starts moving then put it in gear and step on the gas, the vehical lurches aheasd. Then there is the extream where I have seen people put their vehical in park so they don't have to keep their foot on the brake, when the vehical in front of them starts moving they think they are in neutral, pull the gear shift down a notch and give it gas. They must think R stands for RACE. They sure do look funny when they get out of their vehical to see who rear ended them when infact they have backed up into the rear vehical with some force. Watch the vehicals ahead, if you see the back up lights flash after they come to a stop you can be quite sure they using park instead of neutral. At that point I am trying to get into an other lane or back up if I can. By the way they they did a survey as to where the slowest drivers are*****************in front of you. Also the odd of driving are 2 to 1 against you, for every mile of hiway, there are two miles of ditches

If you really want to get technically, switching your tranny into neutral disengages your clutches, then you switch it into drive and slip the clutches until they engage, causing wear as minimal as it is. When you sit with your foot on the brake, clutches stay engaged as if your driving, no wear whatsoever. The Torque converter "slips" as it is desigened to do. You can "torque stall" your tranny all day at idle with next to no chance of overheat unless it's over 120 degress, where your biggest problem will be keeping your tires from melting. Keep tranny in gear, and foot on brake to show people behind you, you are stopped. If you don't like high intensity brake lights in your face, don't stop with your front bumper touching the car in front. nuff said

I don't really care either way. But it is the supposed drivers who sit with their foot on the brake pedal who need training. Proper drivers recognize the brake lights are to warn the person behind that they are braking, not to sit shining their high intensity brake lights at the driver behind for the whole time in the queue, and apply their hand brake to remain stationary.

Well since no one else has said it I guess I will and probably get yelled at. In most state law says it has to be in gear, even costing to a stop in a standard out of gear is a no no. Has to do with being able to move fast and be in control for your car or truck at all times. By the way this comes from the CDL driver Manaul

If there is someone in the crosswalk in front of you the transmission should be in neutral. If it is in gear, all it would take is a yellow jacket to land on your ear and he or she would be flat. It is like having gun pointed at them with your finger on the trigger. In the long run I do not think it would make much difference to the transmission, but it could to the guy in the crosswalk.

Shouldn't hurt a thing in colder months, but in the hot summer and in traffic neutral is the way to go. No bypass, no extra heat. Thats how we run our allison 6 speed in the Peterbuilt.

At idle, the torque converter is making heat.. Anytime the converter is not "Hooked-up" turbulence in it causes heat..heat is what kills automatic transmission fluid...I hope you have a cooler on your truck..!! If it would be a long wait, it could allow the temp to drop some, as you eliminate the heat build-up in the torque converter.

In my opinion, if it is a long light, put it in nuetral, I would think that it would be easier on the clutch pack in it, but I could be wrong.

Myself I've never heard of anyone putting a automatic in neutral while sitting at a stop light. That's the whole reason for buying a automatic...no shifting. I thought that's why they called it a "automatic".
