Where do you get it?

I have quite a few Ideas for stuff I want to weld up. Brackets and such. I just hate going to the welders to buy new steel for this and just have to chuck out a bad idea.
Where do you guys go to find your pile of idea parts?

It's frownd upon in some areas. Put if it should be trash pickup day in a bedroom comunity near you on a day you need to go for parts, go that way. I've picked up bed rails fo the mid gate supports.
I picked up a discarded pool ladder. used them along with some large welding wire spools, also picked up, to make me a comfortable electric fence wire winder. I do about four miles every Spring.
Picked up some bicycles for a ground driven wire winder this spring.
When I see a stack of tires I check'em out. Some folks'll buy a whole new set for one flat tire. Then take the old ones home because last year they were to good to throw away. Probably re-tired three wagons this way. Made a newborn calf wieghing cribout of a childs bed. Made shin knockers my wife and I can use to get in and out of the pickup.
Seeing junck gives me all kindsof ideas to dream on. In other words, just don't look over your neighbor's trash, look it over.

Just as a side note about what people throw out.
The 1st summer I worked as a underground utility locator in Carmal,Ind Ritzy kind of naborhood.
I drug home about 27 lawn mowers that these folks had thrown out. Seems when ever a lawn mower makes a sputtering sound its time to get a new one. I ended up with about 20 good working ones most just needed a tune up or maybe a recoil spring.
Had one heck of a spring rummage sale the next spring.

I go to the place I buy my big peices of steel at. They fabercate lots of things and have all the little sections of all kinds of steel. I go thru them and get my gussets, small angles, plates ect for allmost nothing and do not have to have them cut. Designed quite a few things right out of the scrap. Mark H.

Kelly, Most scrap yards will have just about any kind of metal such as angle iron, I-beam, channel iron tubing, etc. They are less likely to have long lengths, and of course, they dont certify the make up.

Kelly, try your local industrial or steel supplier. These guys sell drops and off fall on pipe, angle and misc. for 15 cents a pound and its good clean stuff and the selection is usually good. Just stop by and ask them what they have in the odds and ends rack..... ....

Good ideas for metal, also i just missed a cletrack dozer, complete, running 2 yr ago, hauled across the scales as junk iorn. When the former owner found out about it he was sick. Im going to try to make a contact in each metal yard.

Smaller scrapyards seem to be the best places to get steel. Several of the larger ones here have been bought up by large companies, & do not allow anyone to look at stuff in the yard, due to liability, company policy, etc. The small ones are glad to sell anything they can to guys like us for a few cents a pound more than they can sell to the remelters. I have found a friendly attitude can go a long way at the scrapyard. Several times they have given me a few pieces of metal, but I always insist on paying something.

Auctions can be a good place to find scrap steel or if you live close to me the lake of the ozarks missouri Ihave tons of it

I pick up steel from all kinds of places, people's garbage, garage sales, scrapyards, etc. If I see something I "might" be able to use someday and it's cheap or free, I take it. I'm getting a pretty good inventory! A new place I just discovered; my local Massey-Ferguson dealer. All his new M-Fs come in with steel rather than wooden crates. The small tractors use light stuff and the big tractors use real nice heavy stuff. Some angle, some channel and some square tubing. All brand new steel; just need to grind off the welds and cut to the length you need.
