I'm interested in purchasing a standard type tractor such as a IH660 or 830 JD. I know that there are many located in Canada and some northern and western US states. Where I'm located it would not be possible for me to view the tractors. Since viewing this board I have noticed that this type if tractor is handled by three or four dealers in Canada, Minnesota and Wisconsin. From experiences of others would I be foolish to trust a dealer at such a distance without seeing the tractor I want to purchase. I have been told it would be better to buy right from a farmer that would sell because they would know the history of the tractor. I have read where some individuals have had problems with dealers. I would appreciate your suggestions. Thanks!

I bought a truck in New York from a fellow with the agreement that when I came to pick it up and wasn't what I expected, he would refund my deposit and I wouldn't have to purchase. I live in Canada and made a weekend trip out of it. The driveshaft did fall out on the way home though.
Bought a tractor off of ebay and drove for 3.5 hrs to look at it before bidding. I paid a lot more for the tractor.

I didn't learn my lesson the first time, and foolishly proceeded to burn myself a second time via an online sight unseen purchase.

Never again.

I purchased a tractor from a jockey in Mountain View Oklahoma several years ago and it was a living nightmare. Neighbor down the road had the same experience. Found the tach had been taken apart and saw pliar marks on ring holding glass in. Was in the late 80's before internet. And a poloroid snapshot in a letter was not enough but I needed the tractor but not bad enough for what it cost me in the next three years. SOLD IT FOR A LOSS

You can check agdealer.com or ironsearch.com and do a search for what your looking for as they both generally have many. These will be mostly Canadian dealers but some US. Do not worry about dealing with the Canadians because he will be more worried about your honesty than you should be about his. He will handle all the paper required at the border as they do this often. Never accept the price listed as they are always flexable. Since these are equipment dealers, JD, NH or other you won't get anything pulled on you but you should be prepared to ask all the right questions..... ..Good luck....

I HAVE NEVER HAD ANY BAD DEALS WHEN IT CAME TO BUYING A TRACTOR FROM A CANADIAN. I HAVE PURCHASED 9 TRACTORS OUT OF CANADA AND ALL WERE GOOD BUYS. I BOUGHT THESE SIGHT UNSEEN. THEY WERE HONEST AS COULD BE I WOULD BUY THERE AGAIN

I have purchased about a dozen tractors in the last three months. I personally looked at only two before I bought them. The others I bought were from ads on this site, and 9 out of 10 were exactly what I expected for the price I paid. None were from dealers. I did talk on the phone and ask lots of questions, and got addditional pictures. In general I would say you have a 90% chance of getting what you paid for, as the folks I dealt with were more honest than not. However, if your talking "big money" tractors you may want to take an up close and personal look before you spend all your hard earned money.

If you are serious about a certain tractor ask people on the discussion boards if they have ever dealt with the seller. I bought a WD9 in Canada a year ago from a private seller. It did not run and I only paid little for it, however it was better than I expected it to be. You can get decent shipping rates if you are patient. Mine came down to WV via in the back of tractor trailer from Winnapeg.

I did buy an ATV sight unseen off EBay (and was well pleased) but by and large I like to go look if I am spending more than $5000. Sometimes make a 4 day weekend road trip to go look at stuff.

I bought some tractors accross the country several years ago from a photo. although I don't feel I got ripped off (the seller was very nice). some things are subjective. mine were advertised as repainted and they were, but not nearly as good as I would have. People's idea of "excellent, very good, good" etc varies. I guess it depend on how much money is involved too.

Dealers are just like people some are good and some don't know the truth if it hits them in the head. The only way I ever buy some thing like a tractor is if I see it. You should be able to find one close enough to you to look at first unless your in a big city.
