Between yesterday and last night we got about 5 inches of heavy, wet, new snow.

So, don't ya know I'm up and out there playin' around at 5 am. The old H and the F-11 with that big bucket just worked great, EXCEPT..... ..... ..

Any kind of a little slope at all and the old heifer loses traction. Lame as aunt Ruby's pet cat!

I ordered the chains 10 days ago and they’re still not here yet. Bummer! :>(

But damn! It felt good to be out there listening to that thing sing! :>)

Allan, chains are the only way to go, as you have already realized. Adding more weight will not do a bit of good on hardpacked snow or ice. I can recall several times when the 4020 we were using to grind feed wouldn't pull itself away from the corn bin because of the ice, the little old Farmall H with chains on came to the rescue every time.

Hi Rusty,

Yep, I've found that out.

I'm pacing the floor waiting on the darned chains; guess I should have ordered them online and they would have been here by now. But no, I had to save a few bucks by ordering from the local tire shop. :>(

I can't wait to see how the old gal crawls up and down these hills when she's chained up.

Other than the traction issue, I'm really pleased with the H/F-11 combo; really works slick for an oldie. I was concerned about the steering, but I don't even notice it; used to drivin' the old things, I guess.

However, the next item is that darned muffler!!! I'm going to bite the bullet and buy an IH original; the thing sounds too much like a gutted muffler to me. It has the "Super-Duper" aftermarket replacement on it now. UGH!

Thanks for the hollar,

Allan

I think that the Peerless chain company makes most of the chains sold in this part of the country and they are located in Winona Minnesota.

Snow would be nice here in Texas. I would settle for just rain right now. I have seen many posts about snow/ice chains and wouldn't a set of steel wheels be better for the older tractors?

Hey guys, weight doesn't matter that much on packed down snow. I have a 4020 weighted heavy and once it gets on that glazed snow all it does is spin. I learned a long time ago that if you're serious about moving in winter USE CHAINS!

You'll be happy when you get your chains I bet. I use chains on my M if I have to plow the drive. I think I had the chains on 2 winters out of 10.

Allan, It would appear to me that the reason you lost traction is because there isn't enough wt on the rear end to keep it on the ground, Uh, I mean snow! If I recal the pic you posted of your ol darlin, it only had one wt/ wheel. Add one or two extra during the winter months. That snow gets as heavy as any soil you have ever moved.
Or perhaps Load the tires if they arn't already.
Anyway, it is a thought.
Good Luck,
Later,
John A.

Hi John,

It does have two sets of weights and it does pretty well out on the flat...but, you're right, that style loader makes 'er front heavy. I've got the front tires aired up to over 50 lbs too.

I'm sure all will be okay after the chains get here on Monday, tho.

But ya know what? I could maybe use this as an excuse for another tractor!!! Wonder if that would fly with my local war dept.? Hmmmmm

Those kinda greenish tinited 60s and 70s have been drawin' the drool here at my desk as of late. :>)

Thanks for the hollar,

Allan

Greenish 60 is not better. Plowed snow tonight. Have 2 sets of F & H weights on rear. Still spins in this icy snow. Had the JD 45 loader on my "50" with chain, but put it on the "60" with PS this summer. Got to get new chains or extend to old to fit.

Kurt,

Yep, I think I'm missing the old F-10 too. That thing hung a lot of weight back there on the rear.

It's a lot different with this F-11; seems like everything is hangin' out on the front. Oh well, certainly 'twas fun tho; hope it snows tonight too.

Brother! A 59 year old man wanting it to snow; must be losing it! :>)
