I recently had my 1941 9N engine machined and rebuilt. I rebuilt the distributer (points, condenser, cap, and coil) and set reset the timing at low rpm. It is difficult to start and backfires a little through the carb when doing so. Once going it purs like a beauty when idling but pings and fires back through the exhaust when revving up. It can barely run at mowing speed and I will need to plow snow soon. Anyone know what I am missing? I have the points at 0.015 like the manual suggests and am at the end of my rope. This Ford may end up as a very expensive boat anchor. It has given me 15 years of trouble free service prior to a blowout which was all my fault last winter. I love it but it doesnt love me.

Thanks for all the great info. It was in fact my fault. I had the the plug wires screwjawed. I had checked them before but I had to finally rely on the ohm meter to find the problem. Now its poppin' wheelies. Thanks again. Jack

Jack, Did you rebuild the distributor or just replace the ignition components on it?
Make sure that you have the plug wires on right and be sure you have the right ignition timing. If the plug wires are on right, your ignition might be overly retarded. Also make sure your advance mechanism is working properly.
You might also check and see if you have sticking valves also. It's kinda common on these engines.

#1. Check your valve settings.

#2. Remove distributor, and set points and timing on the bench, as shown in the shop manual..

#3. Re-install distributor, and be SURE to install plug wires in correct timing order.

I had the same problem with mine and I suspect that you have a sparkplug problem .

1st. , check that you have the plug wires hooked up in the right order . The posts on the distributor cap are numbered . Crank her up now and see how it runs .

If that did not work , pull each plug and make sure you have spark . If you don't , check the plug wires with a meter to make sure they are ok.

This should get you going .

Worked for me on my 2N.

Good Luck !

I believe you have valve adjustment problems.there is no way it should backfire thru the carb or the exhuast, unless the valves are to tight
