a temp. fix for cap is scrape the carbom track out with a knife point and fill with bee's wax to keep moisture out . or use a good igniton sealer . even finger nail polish . the bee's wax we did in the navy 50 some years ago parts hard to get then. lots of luck old art

It has good compression so it isn't the valves and yes I've tried the spack plug to engine block and no spark and as far as what this thing is I still don't know for sure its a cletrac or clark or case track loader Its has a continetal engine some think its a model F I have the parts house ordering me a cap and rotor but I'm not hopeful that they will find the right parts and yes it seems to have a carbon track on the inside of the cap I tryed to clean it out and had spark for a couple turns of the engine and then it went AWOL

It sounds as if you are on the right track, there are lots of tractors that used the continental engine, Massey Harris is one that comes to mind, If your parts house can't find a cap, they are not trying very hard.

You say you have switched the plugs and wires from one cylinder to another and the plugs and wires work o.k. on all cylinders except #4.
Have you cranked the engine over with #4 spark plug connected to the proper wire, but not screwed into the engine?
If you do not observe any spark that way, then I think the problem could very well be the distributor cap.
If you DO see a spark, then the problem is more than likely a stuck open intake or exhaust valve.

Aloha, I doubt that it could be the rotor since the other 3 fires ok. I would suspect the cap, so turn it over and check the contact if it's still there and also look for any carbon tracks around # 4 contact in the cap. Also check the outside for any carbon tracks. I don't know if your cap is held down by screws or clips, but if it is held down by screws and the screw are close to #4, then sometimes internally in the cap it grounds out to the screw and a new cap is the fix. Carbon tracks can be cleaned off but I would still get a new cap. Hope this helps.

Mahalo,
Howard

well I know it isn't plug or plug wire since I've swapped from #1 to # 4 and the wire and plug work in the other cylinder and so far I haven't found a new cap or rotor for this old thing

So... what is 'this old thing'? A name, the mag type/model, might just bring some reward.
If it is the cap cracked through to the screw, you could try a nylon screw or grind out the short and fill with a suitable filler.

You might have a bad plug wire. It is also possible the spark plug itself is no good, even though it's new. I've had it happen a couple of times.

it might be the distributer cap or the router not making contact on the #4 cylindar. try replacing the cap and router and see if that works. also check all the electrical contact on the wires and plugs to make sure that they are making contact. Dan

Use steel #1 steel wool and a small screwdriver or the like and clean out the wire towers on the cap. They can get corroded and not function.
