Back in 1977, I purchased a running but unrestored 1958 Buick for $1,000. It needed paint and tires, so I had new tires installed and a paint job. Then the car sat in a garage for 25 years with little attention other than starting it up twice a year and driving it for about a mile. Last year, I sold the car on Ebay to make room for tractors. The car sold for almost $8,000. Obviously, the car appreciated over the years despite gradual deterioration, as the paint had faded and the engine ran rough when I sold it.

My question is, how much have antique tractor values increased over the last 25 years? I don't know because I wasn't restoring tractors back then. What does the future look like? Does it look like tractor values will appreciate in the next 25 years? I realize that tractor restoration is not a lucrative money-maker in the short term, but are there financial rewards in keeping tractors for the long haul?

It's hard to say what the actual monetary value of tractors will be in twenty five years. For me, I buy them, fix them up, and use them for one reason. I like them. I farm in partnership with my father and brother. We all work full time off the farm, but manage to run about 75 cow-calf pairs. All are farming is done with "classic tractors", right now I have 8 myself, but between the three of us we have 22 tractors all in use for different things on the farm. I'm 24,and many of my friends have just as many tractors as myself, and we are all still buying more. I don't plan on ever becoming rich from my tractors, but I sure enjoy them, and to me that's what counts. Instead of spending my money on the bar stool every night with a cig. in my hand, I work in my shop on tractors. My thought, for what it's worth.

Maybe we can get something going here!

I used to restore cars and switched to tractors about 4 years ago. I don't plan on making any money off my tractors, but don't plan on losing any either.

I bought a 1941 A farmall to mow my acreage with.
If I use it for 10 years, it will owe me nothing.
This tractor has paid me back in enjoyment, its actually fun to mow with it.

Here's my guess on the future. 25 years from now, there aren't going to be many folks interested in pre-1960 tractors therefore there will be no market for them. My grandson would like to push one over a cliff, that would be his idea of enjoying a tractor. Here is where I will make folks mad. The only tractors that will have any value are the specialty ones like the orchard models perhaps. I just don't see many folks who will be wanting an H farmall which I grew up with. When I go to tractor shows, I don't see many folks under 25 years old, I see a lot of old farts like me.

Get a tractor that you can enjoy while you are still around, and don't worry about how much it will appreciate.

My Dad always had cattle & most of the time an old tractor of some kind. I didn't get interested in old tractors until I was nearly 50. Maybe it's a settling down/age thing... I have his old 8N he sold without asking, then I bought back for toooo much money; another 8N and a JD 1020 which I wouldn't take for.
