Farmer in the D

I have been looking for a backhoe this summer and have found three different types. Frame mount, drawbar mount and 3 point. What are the pros and cons to any of these types? I will be using it around the farm only so a lighter one will do. It will go on an 1850 D or Ford 2000 gas without live PTO. Any suggestions?

Look for a frame mount that can be removed easly. Don't forget you will need some weight on the front end if you don't have a loader.

I have a MF 220 hoe mounted on a 203 MF industrial with a big front end loader on it I can tell you that if you get a used hoe you need to be able to work it dig with it etc to see how bad it leaks and what power it has it is very hard to get some seals and other parts and if cylinders need rebuiling get out your wallet I got taken so I am just passing on the info after I am done with this machine I could have got a nice working machine for what it costs to redo it.

For the 2000 I'd go with the frame mounted 713/723 series backhoe. It ties in well to the tractor(not difficult to drop/mount attachment) and appears to distribute load well - not over stressing one area of the tractor. Make sure you get the proper attachment kit for your type of tractor - Utility Industrial,Heavy duty industrial etc and the proper sized Hydraulic pump - I think the range is 11-18 gpm depending backhoe reach. I have a 723 hoe on a (63) 2000 utility industrial.

Farmer, more rigid is better. Mine has two rails that slide onto the bottom of my loader mount. The rear attachment is two pins. You'd call this a frame mount. Anything that puts extra stress on possible weak points on the back of your tractor you want to avoid. My hoe is large for my tractor and could seriously damage it mounted any other way. I've seen successful 3pt attachments, but only with small hoes on very large tractors. Bear in mind that the largest stress is up, not down.

We had a customer a few years back that had one mounted on his tractor. The way it attached though I'm not sure wether you'd call it drawbar mounted or frame mounted. It had brackets mounted directly to the frame where a drawbar would go, and you'd put the bottom of the attachment in them and then had two dropdown arms with tie bolts that pulled it in tight at the top. It was really easy to hook up and remove, but when it was tied down, it didn't move a bit. I know he used it for years, on a daily basis, in his sprinkler business digging pipe trenches, and when he semi retired used it for a few more part time. The old machine was tough because I know it caught He--, I've even seen him load it on a flat bed using loader and hoe booms...scary to watch knowing how it was attached... and it never even attempted to loosen or come off. Like I said I don't know what type mount you'd consider this, but if I had a choice of types other than a factory built hoe, I'd choose a mount like this.
