I know, I know I am just a farmer trying to hold some old equipment together. But recently I needed a new Detachable link chain for my Brillion drill seeder. Probably the same size as used on the Van Brunt grain drills. Went to that fancy JD Dealer just South of us and learned from the parts man that that chain was so obsolete that maybe I should try to get one from the Amish hardware store in the country. After all the seeder is probably 20-25 years old (probably newer than my newest tractor that I farm with (4450). I just turned tail and went an extra 3 miles in another direction and the parts mans only question was, "How long do you need?" Sure is odd how a parts man can put such a bitter taste in some dealers. The service department has been looking for some shop work and called yesterday to see if I'd bring in the 4450 for some leaks that I had complained about. I just told them it was to old and I'd check with the horse and buggy amish that live nearby.

the guys i used to work for had me stop at local dere dealer before i went to farm one morning jon said parts man knows you are coming and what you need you shouldn't have to wait for it. i went there and and other than parts man was only person in store. he kept picking his nose or scratch his but or something. he finally looked at me blew smoke in my face and said what do you want? i told he jon said you have some parts for me to pick up. he said jon who? by now i'm starting to do a hot burn as i had picked up parts for boss before and had been in store with both of them several times. parts man finished his cigarette and found the parts jon called him about. they where still in the parts bin even tho he knew i was coming for them. when i got to jon's he said were they busy in there? i said no and told him what happened.
after i went to feild with tractor jon called owner of business and told him what happened. jon said i know he has been the same with me. the next day jon told me the parts man got fired and it was my fault. the owner told jon that's the last straw. i can't put up with him anymore i've told him about his poor attitude with customers and the way he acts toward some of the farmers wives

I worked for a Case IH and Case construction dealer fresh out of college thought that is what I wanted to do soon found out different alot of what you are talking about is upper management problems the dealer we had was that way the service manager was rude and always looking to stick it to somebody the salesmen were great guys and for the most part the parts guys were great but we had one old guy there that would sit at the desk and look on the computer and if there was ten people at the counter he would not even answer the phone had some people that I knew pretty well ask me about it and I pointed them to the GMs office they complained to no avail I have not worked there in 2 years and went in there the other day toi get some stuff and the old man was sitting in the same spot he always did. They were busy so I looked up my own parts wrote the numbers down and told them to bill me.

You guys crack me up ! You always want to blame the parts counter guys. Maybe you should look closer at the management ! When you do get a good one what do YOU do to support him/her ?

You should all spend as much time behind the counter as in front of it and then you will see how it really is. Customers are no joy either. Alot of them don't even know what they own.

Sometimes the counter guy is management. We had a JD dealer in Winchester owned by two men and both were there most the time. One was a great guy that would help any way he could, he even worked the shop when short handed. The other only waited on 5:00 to come. I was grinding feed when I snapped the drive shaft on the NH grinder mixer with the 4440. I ran to town and walked in carrying the broken shaft. The contrary one was at the counter and ask what did I have there, when I told him he informed me that they did not sale NH grinders. On my way to the truck the other partner was getting out of his truck and without me asking he ask what it was off of and promptly fixed me up a new shaft. It is not always just the counter man, some management has a bad attitude as well.

I used to go to a JD dealer and it was like a fashion show. One of the secretaries would parade back and forth in front of me while I was sitting at the parts counter. I believe she thought she was a runway model.

Getting parts from ANY parts store depends alot on partsman. It's not always JD,CIH.AGCO,Kubota or some other brands fault. Did you complain to owner or general manager? I called local JD dealer and ordered/received some link chain for a JD H manure no problem. It wasn't terribly high,20 links for $12.00. Tx Jim

We've got 1dealer near us that did that, except it was the servie department that put the bad taste in our mouth. They ran a couple tests on the engine of our tractor before asking us and socked us the bill. We know the parts dept. isn't as bad, but I'll still drive an extra 10-20 miles out of my way to go to the other White/Oliver parts dealer.

We still go there once in a great while, but that's because they're the only dealership to stay open till 3 on Saturday afternoons. They also have some rental equipment we can't get form anyone else.

1.) Sign up at jdparts.com

2.) Look the chain up yourself. They have a GREAT search feature to find generic parts, and steel detachable chain is one that comes up as available from Deere in a WIDE variety of "pitches".

3.) Order it yourself, and pick it up at the dealer, thereby bypassing the CLUELESS "not yet dry behind the ears" partsman from having to look it up.

I think the biggest problem is that all the old good parts men have died or retired. I had the same trouble from our local New Holland(Ford) dealor. I was trying to gat parts for my BMB mower which they deal as Rhino now and the parts person wouldn't even try to locate my part. She did give me a toll free number to Rhino and they had 1200 of the parts I needed in a warehouse in Kansas City, but would not sale it to me because I wasn't a dealer, so I had to go back to the local dealer to have them order it for me. I did not see any since in all this hoopla.

The local CASE dealer is the same way. Unless you are going to buy $$,$$$.$$ of parts and accessories, we really don't have time for you. There are 3 of them in So. Cal. they are owned by the same people. I havent been to the other 2 stores, and I won't. Come to find out their reputation is already known. They have cut their own throat. Oh, and don't ask any questions..... I now deal with a bunch of great guys (I don't know if they are gay) in Pheinox Az. WWW.falconpower.com

You probably should have told them exactly word for word why you didn't want them to do the service work. Any company is only as good as the people who deal with the customers. A couple good customers complaining and the parts guy would probably be looking for work. Jmho. later

I ordered an air filter for my 2950 from the new JD dealer near here (ordered because they don't stock air filters of that size!) recently and when I went in to get it all the parts people gathered around to look at "is that the great big one we got in yesterday?" it.

Point is if it doesn't go on a lawn mower they don't have it. really a shame

I have a feeling I know which John Deere dealer you're referring to. I'm just down the road from them. (and not far from where you are) You want to feel like you're living in the stone age? Try to buy a tractor from them. I was told (1) My trade-in wasn't worth the cost of hauling it in to their lot. (I later sold it myself for $14,000, must cost a lot to run their trucks.) (2) According to the sales manager, I didn't know what I wanted and they were there to help educate me on "modern tractors". (I knew EXACTLY what model I wanted to look at/buy. Later I did buy that model from another dealer) (3) Since I "didn't know much about tractors" the salesman would show me everything I needed to know (I've owned and used tractors of my own for almost 50 years, and currently own 7) (4)Until I got all the "silly ideas" about buying another brand out of my head, I was "wasting their time" shopping at that dealer.

I quit wasting their time. Wouldn't buy anything there now if it was the last tractor dealer on earth. I spent my $65,000 elsewhere. I'll do everything in my power to dissuade anyone else from buying there.

I had a similar experience with a John Deere dealer in Spokane. I told him exactly what I wanted. His reply was, "Why!" and he proceeded to tell me what he I should have. He didn't try to convince me or sell me - he told me. I left and went to a Massey Ferguson dealer and told them what I wanted. They said, "No problem, when would you like it." Walter Implement in Airway Heights has always treated me well. I try to tell everyone who the bad dealers are and who the goods ones are. I am sick of poor service these days. I complain to the dealership owners and then I follow it up with a letter to the manufacturer

I am always looking at new replacements for my 2950 MFWD with cab and loader (in my head at least) and I really really want a MF 5465 but always think that I also should consider a JD 6420.

Were you by any chance looking for a 6420 at the deere dealership (the one I was talking about above is Heartland outside of Louisville) and went elsewhere and bought a MF 5465.

Just wondering, none of my business really. I also was wondering what MF dealer do you deal with. I farm in Spencer Co. and live in Jefferson Co. none are real close and I've had a bad experience with a dealer.

I was speaking about Hartland Deere also. I ended up buying a Deere 6430 over at Shelbyville.

I've dealt with Parrish Implement for MF in the past, but when they closed, I started trading with Cottrells just north of Shelbyville on US 60.

Yea, i figured you were talking about Heartland. I know the service manager there and he is a sharp fellow, been working on deeres forever. the rest of the crew there isn't worth talking to. i also have begun getting my parts from shelbyville since Deere pulled the dealer liscence from the place in Bardstown to give it to heartland, just doesn't make sense to me.

My family also dealt with Parrish in the past, stickers from them on implements all over my farm. I bought an 1105 two winters ago from Hourigan's MF (he's in gravel switch) and I don't think that they treated me real well, I'm not going back. I've talked to and bought parts from Mike Cottrell a few times now and he gets all my business from now on. Nice people in there.

I've just gotta ask, due to your named interst in MF why the JD 6430 over a MF 5465 or 6465?

I'm just dying to get my hands on a 5465.

2 words. My son. We bought this tractor together. (He picked it out and I paid for it) He wanted that particular model. I've had to pleasure of spending a few hours in the cab and it is a sweet ride. I'm more in tune with the "oldies". My newest tractor (that I call all mine) is 29 years old. I still use one that I bought new 36 years ago. (MF150) I'm more or less retired from farming. (Never was in it in a big way) Still hayin' about 45 acres for something to keep me off the streets. That and helping Jonathon when he needs help. We use the 6430 in our mowing business and on his farm. He's south of J-Town on 155

I understand, the "new" JD drew him in, can't blame him a bit,it is a very fine machine, like I said before, I would strongly be considering a 6420 or 30 if I were shoping for a new machine.

Its a small world, I lived in J'town for many years (still live in L'ville) and still to this day drive 155 to get to Taylorsville and then another few miles to 623 which takes me to my farm, well it's still my grandmothers but I run it and am directly in line to receive it one day.

My G'dad always ran MF 135s and 35s only on the farm when I was a kid. My dad bought the "big" tractor a 165 diesel but the tornado of '74 wrecked it and it never was replaced. So just from family values I'm trying to get to masseys whenever I can but right now I've got the JD2950 which is my main machine, a MF1105 for heavy work and a Ford 3600 for light work. No color consistency on my place!

I've got some hay fields that I'm really having trouble getting the weeds out of and the grass to thicken up in, any chance you're interested in checking them out and offering some wisdom?
