I know this is off topic but for the first time
since 9/11 I saw a TV special last night about how the people of Canada treated the 30,000 or 40,000 air travelers that were stranded in Canada for 3 or 4 days after 9/11. It's been two years and that is the first thing I have seen on how the Canadian people helped those stressed out travelers. Thanks!

I deal with some people from north of the border in my work. My company has some equipment made in Canada and I sometimes have to call for techinal assistance. The technicians are all knowledgable and a pleasure to talk with. Spent a week there when we first bought the equipment for afactory training course, same thing, the people were great.

The biggest problem with Canada and the US is the 2-bit politicians, not the people, in all my dealings with Americans,I find there is no border.I am proud to have my neighbor to the south as my neighbor and to echo other posts,if Canada had a major problem I know the US would be there to help.Dan in Alberta.

Shortly after the second plane hit the Towers 9/11/01 I was sent to our local border crossing to assist the Customs and Immigration Officers. By 10:30 AM there were good Canadians crossing the border to go to our local hospital and donate blood. I was touched that these folks thought to do this. By 1:00 I was enroute to NYC. On 9/12/01 I was at "Ground Zero" escorting remains to the mourge. I met a priest there who had just arrived from near Ottawa. I explained I lived about an hour south of Ottawa in NY and we sort of hit it off. I also met a NY City Cop who didn't know that Canada bordered NY, that milk still came from cows or that there even were such a thing as NY State Troopers. I know she was the exception, but I felt a lot more in tune with the priest than the City Cop. On the other hand, just this afternoon I talked to a Quebec trucker who was complaining that he had to go through so much to get into the States. I pointed out that tommorow is 9/11. He replied that, " 9/11 is your problem, not ours." I imagine he voted for Cretain.

That hospitality DID get some coverage by the US news media at the time; perhaps many people were so fixed on the events in NYC that they didn't pay much attention to it. I remember seeing it covered on ABC and NBC within a day or so of the time those people started coming back to the US. One of the networks had roughly a half-hour about it one evening within a couple of weeks of the event.

Well it isn't like the Canadien people don't owe their powerful, wealthy neighbor a great deal of gratitude. Sure that was a nice gesture but if it wasn't for the US, Canada wouldn't exist as it does, free and prosperous. If anything happened similar in Canada, the US would provide unlimited support of any form or fashion. How much do they save in defense every year because the mighty US shares the continent and borders Canada? I am sure this will get me flamed or banned from the site but it is true. I am NOT anti Canadien in any form but I do tire of hearing Canucks bash our President and Country on other sites as well as this one from time to time. In reality, the debt they owe us will never be balanced. On another note, they did give us hockey, and for that I am very very grateful.

I have family on both sides of the border. As far as i'm concerned we have no real differences. With any luck our current Prime Minister will be only a bad footnote in history books in the years to come. We should have helped in Iraq, easily could have. Sometimes political thinking here is short sighted.

we have troops in afganastan fighting along side americans and others and we did lose some to friendly fire and we will lose more before all this is over, if you want to look at someone to blame lets start talking about the people from birth who are taught to kill not only americans but all westerners, if you think we aren,t in a world war think again, these people call it a holy war, wars aren,t nice and before this is all said and done it won,t be either, and we are gonna have to get a lot tougher if we are going to survive this and quit worrying about being policitally correct, these people want us dead , you better be ready to kill or be killed and don,t worry about who you may offend when you stand up and speak your mind.

Canada or US the people who carry the load are the ones who get along and take care of each other while BOTH our governments seem to have a different world they live in. Why is it the media discovers the Heartland? and people with such good sense and Heart. Then they go back to the government world and the same ole bull starts all over again.
Does it require some kind of blinders to be in government?

Well, I'm not anti-American, but it would help you to check your facts first. Canada, Great Britain, and the rest of the Commonwealth shouldered the weight of WWII for more than two years before the US entered the war in December 1941. Funny how FDR didn't feel it was in the interest of the US to join in September of 1939 when Canada did. The world would be a vastly different place today, if not for the leadership of Winston Churchill. That said, I feel the behaviour of our government has been despicable, with reguard to Iraq. Not only have they done nothing, they will not come out and say they will do nothing, or what they will do. PM Chretien is the absolute antithesis of Churchill. Flame on.

If it had been up to FDR alone we (The U.S.) would have been in the fight for Europe from 1939 on, but FDR could not convince enough members of congress of the need to fight along with the U.K. against Germany. Nor could he muster enough support from the general population to force congress to act. Some people, such as Joseph Kennedy, Ambassador to Great Britain and father of JFK, openly lobbied FDR to support Germany because he thought the British could not hold out. Congress, rightfully, was reluctant to become involved in the affairs of other countries, but they were too short-sighted to realize that we were already involved anyway, want it or not. FDR was able (just barely) to get Lend-Lease through to provide badly needed material and supplies to Great Britain and her allies. The U.S. Navy was de-facto involved in escorting/protecting convoys to England long before December 7, 1941, but not officially.
Pearl Harbor was the jolt to the conciousness that galvanized the public's resolve to finally do the right thing and go to the aid of Great Britain and her allies. Winston Churchill, in what was the one of the finest examples of great leadership in history, kept the british people steadfast against the Nazi's, and held on until the U.S. provided enough support to turn the tide against Germany.
In doing so, Churchill saved the free world.
In his own words, Churchill later wrote that on the evening of the attack on Pearl Harbor, he went to bed and "slept the sleep of the saved"

I would agree with most of your post,it is an outrage that a lot of the citizens of the U.S. and most likely Canada too have chosen ignorance of anything that requires thought or discomfort for them. We also seem willing to elect any piece of trash who we think will give us what we want from the government checkbook. Our troops too are forced to use food stamps or banks, while the waste and extravagant life in Washington goes on. I would though have to take exception,as I think the other allies would, to the last line of your post. Canada paid a terrible price, but hardly carried the bulk of the war in Europe.

Mike,

I'm not mad. Last night was just the first that I had heard anything about how much the local Canadian people worked to make the stranded tourists, mostly Americans, comfortable during the No Fly ordeal. I am still surprised that the assistance was so great and so little was in the American media.

many of those american folks have come back here to visit and frienships have been made that will last a life time, true friendship and im sure if the shoe was on the other foot the people in the states would have done the same, policits aside and a news media thats only out for themselves, when it all come down to it were pretty much the same .we care about people , offer help when needed ,or just being a good neightbour.

Well said Toolman.

I agree that I wouldn't care if the people were American, Canadian, English, Irish or what ever. If someone needed help and a place to stay due to word event they would be welcome in my house.

Canada also send alot of relief to NY during the crisis.

There was a lot of extra blood drives and food drives as well we sent fire fighters and rescue people to help with the recovery efforts.

Sometimes the American media passes over how the Canadians help. Not that we are doing it for press time but it is nice to know you are appreciated.

You should also know that not all the Canadian citizens agree with our government's and anti war protester's stand on the Iraq war. Personnally I think it was disgusting that we did not offer assistance to our only neighbouring country (USA) and our mother country (England) when they went to war. It had shades of WWII when we (Canada) and England were at war and the USA refused to join. I was afraid that something large would happen to us and bring us into the war like Pearl Harbour did then. You know the old saying "if you don't learn from the past you are doomed to repeat it". I am sure glad that the US had the guts to end Saddam's reign.

It is going to get alot tougher before it gets easier. All of our stomachs will be tested over the next five years.

War disgusts me and I would like to see our children come home. We can't ignore these lunatics in the world though, so all we can do is pray for our own and their safe return.

Stay well, stay free.
