I have a John Deere 60 with a bad manifold gasket.
Can anyone tell me how to free the bolts holding it on? Also what grade bolt should be used to replace these bolts? thanks.

Lots of Blaster, lots of patience. Work them on and off a little at a time, and if you are lucky, they'll come out. If one breaks off, or you are wanting to replace them, you will probably have to get the correct JD studs to replace them. Don't know about the numbered series, but I do know with the lettered series, they had a special thread. If you put regular stud bolts in them, they would leak. Also, if they are too long, you stand the chance of piercing the push rod tubes in the head and causing a leak into the crankcase. Holds true for the lettered series, may or may not for the numbered series.

I took the ones on my 60 out but I soaked them with kroil then tapped the heads with a hammer quite a few times so the rust broke loose around the bolts and washers all but one came out that one broke off I welded a washer to it then a nut to that and it came out Your best bet is to take lots of time lots of kroil or pb blaster and tap them with a hammer until they come loose

I replaced the manifold on my Farmall H last week. I sprayed the bolts with PB Blaster for 3 days before I even put a wrench on them. All of them came right out. Hopefully you'll have the same luck.
