The clutch rod has come apart in the hollow cavity in the middle of the tractor
body. It appears to be a threaded sleeve that was holding it together. About 5/16"
pipe thread. Do I have to split the tractor to get it back together?
Thanks in advance for your help.

You might as well split it rather than wrestling with it and then still have tosplit it. Hold the engine up with a hoist just as you would pull the engine. If you hook the chain at the rear only, it's likely to turn upside down on the narrow front end. The clutch housing end is not bad heavy.

Sounds like you have amess as there is no coupling in the linkage someone has rigged a mess better split and fix it rite. There is no 5/16 pipe thread. You can e-mail me if you need more info.
