If I gave you $3,000 to buy a used, small square baler... what would you get?? What brand and model? What is considered the Cadillac of balers?

I have 3 balers one NH320 and two NH278's. They have the heavy duty drive lines and even at 20-27 years old they have the capacity of any new 14x18 baler on the market.

My last baler I bought the NH278 I paid $1250 Cdn 3 years ago, plus it came with a parts baler. It was the best buy I've got in a long while. The baler needed a little TLC here and there but over all it hadn't seen many bales over the years. It makes a nice bale and the knotters never miss.

Our orginal 278 that we got back in 1975 still works like a charm. I think its getting close to 800,000 bales.

I would think for 3000 you could get a pretty nice baler. Don't pay that kind of money for something too old and too small. If you take your time I find you can pick up these 20 year old small square balers cheap. Lots of older retired farmers have them in sheds collecting dust or outside collecting rust!

Any of the main 3 NH, JD or Hesston balers would work fine. Just depends on what ever dealer is local.

WE use a a JD 336 and a 346 al the time and have very few problems with them at all under normal conditions. I won't knock an NH though as I have seen then do as much as Deere. We used to have an old Oliver baler that run really good also. Big thing isto be sure whichever you buy is not worn out (obviously) but check the knotters real good for wear and loose parts. Right now the knotters on our 346 are worn out and are gonna need replacing (read expensive). Check to make sure everything in there is tight as well as the bale plunger, flywheel, u-joints, etc.

I have seen balers of most any brand bale really good and some wouldn't tie a bale if you payed it to. if you plan on doing alot of baling get a Jd or NH or even a Hesston if you can. For baling around your farm for say 200-500 bales a year most anything that is in good shape will work.

What you are looking for is a bargain. They come in all colors. There are a good many balers that you would be better off with-out. Out of a short list of "good" balers, go looking for a good buy on a good baler. Buying used, you're buying the condition of that particular piece of equipment, as much as what brand.

Or, be prepared to search for a while. I found what I wanted after a few years of looking. Deere 336

While on the subject of bailers, is any one old enough to have ever had to (poke) wires on a bailer?

NH 273 or NH 311 should be bought in that range, maybe? Both are excellent for small to mid size farms.

We've used a Ford 532 for over 20 years. Bought it new, little use any more. Over 200,000 bales gone through. It's a good baler, with NewHolland knotters. Had to replace bushings and plunger bearings recently, for first time. But be aware that these things are now old orphans, and some parts are obsolete. That being said, if you found one in good shape, it would be well in your price bracket. Otherwise, NH in my opinion.

JOHN DEERE BALERS ARE ON THE NO.1 LIST AND THAN NEW HOLLAND THEY ARE THE BEST ON THE
MARKET PROBLEM FREE BALING. BUT WITH ALL EQUIPMENT YOU MUST CLEAN IT OUT OR YOU WILL SHORTEN THE LIFE OF ANY BALER

Pat; I think a NH, but for that money, you are going to get a "old one" (30Yrs) Just sold a #283 for $2500, baled a lot of hay with it, but it was time for it to go, tired of fighting it!!! A NH# #580 is nice, also Freeman makes a nice bailer, however not in your price quote!! A lot depends how many acres you are doing????? There is nothing worse than a bailer that does not bale....

We have used NH balers for ever and a day. I would consider them to be the cadillac's but never used a Deere. Would recommend a NH 565 or larger but probably not gonna get one for under $4000. Got atleast 250,000 on our 570 with only regular replacement parts. Liked the 327 we had, could probably get one of those for about $4000. Good luck.

Last spring bought a 346 JD for $2800. Used it this year with no problems. I like the gear drive knotters.
