This is more of a computer question that a tractor question, but here it goes. I have been using my very limited knowledge of computers while sort of building my computer over the last few weeks so I can use it to restore my Farmall M. (I'm too cheap to pay $1000 for a nice new computer.) I recently installed a modem, and now have internet service. There is one problem that I have found so far. The graphics are poor, and error messages pop up saying I should be using 256 colors, instead of 12, or something like that. However, I do not have the option to switch to 256 colors (under settings, control panel, display, settings). I want to make some tractor related purchases on E-bay, but the pictures are very ugly, so I can't tell the condition of the parts. I need to know what dictates the 256 color option. Is is the graphics card, or operating sysytem, or what? If anybody has any information relating to this, please help out. Thanks!

Gleen is correct. You need the correct drivers for your video card. If it's GW w/233 your video card is hopefully the one that came with the system, when new, then you should be able to access the GW tech suport folks via their webpage and download the latest and greatest video driver you have. The top of the GW webpage will allow you to search for the exact drivers you need. Type in your serial number and it will list everything that came shipped with your PC. It will allow you to see, for free, your video card and there is a tab to take you to the drivers page for the video card you have. The download may take some time if you're using a dial up modem. Down load it and install it. Reboot your PC and then setup your video card settings. Your card will only be handle 16bit at and least display it in 800 X 600. Video cards of that time should have no problem handling these settings. Save the changes and you should be good to go. Let me know if you need more help. clpeterson@towson.edu

What kind of camora are you using? Is there different settings to take pics. at? Maybe your camora settings are to high for what your PC will recognize.

You are misssing the drivers for the video card.
Depending on the monitor, you may also need to locate and install the .inf file so Windows will know what monitor you have.
Go into Device Manager and you will see a list of all the hardware on your comptuer. look for yellow exclamation marks, that indicates a problem.
Also check the Display Adaptor and Monitor sections and see if it lists your exact video card and monitor.

Pop the cover off and figure out which graphic card you have. Brouse the internet for drivers or locate the OEM Mfger and download the correct drivers. Then go back and don't just choose 256. Go ahead and choose 24bit true color or something higher.

If you have Windows 95 or newer and a monitor of comparable age, that should be no problem. If you don't want to shell out for a new system, you can get good used systems for a song in the classifieds. These systems have the benefit of having been engineered and designed for Windows and graphics even if they are a little old. Unlike decent makes tractors, computers drop steeply in price with age so that by the time a computer is five years old or more., it has essentially give-away value. Not the case for a Deere! I am like you in that I'd rather put money into tractor iron than computer silicon. However, you do need a minimum level of performance. Just my $0.02, good luck.

Thanks for the reply. I am running windows 98. It is a Gateway 2000 233Mhz, so it is not a screamer right off the showroom floor, but still should handle what I need it for. What I don't understand is where I need to concentrate my efforts to get more that 56 available colors on the display. Do you know if it is a software installation error, a weak graphics card, or something else?

It is most likely running in either 16-color or 256-color mode. Like C, TimC, and Paul said, you need the correct drivers for the video card. Since you have a Gateway computer, you should be able to get them from Gateway's Web site. If the video card is built into the motherboard, there will be no extra card to look at.

So, do you have 12 colors, or 56 available now? Seems the rules are changing, harder to help when we don't know what you are actually doing.... I don't think ether of those are a valid number, so where are you at?

Some real old monitors might limit your color choice.

But, it is the graphics driver. You must have some generic 'safe mode' driver working. As the other message says, find the right graphics driver & you should be fine.
