I understand that these tractors had rear end concerns, similar to those of a 560 Farmall. Theoretically, there was a recall, by AC, whereby the original rear end components were replaced with heavier parts, curing the problem.

I am considering trading a jd 3020 gas, for a 190xt diesel. How can I be sure that the 190xt has had the upgrades, at this point in time, 35 years after it was built?

Should I just take a "pass" on this tractor and search for something else?

How serious was the problem, and how likely would I be to encounter it again, now?

I was a District Manager for AC during when the 190XT's were having problems. The kits did help some, but there were two other things that the company did that helped more. #1 was to assemble the shafts with more preload on the bearings than was standard to keep the shafts from flexing, thus moving apart and reducing the area of tooth contact. #2 was to dyno the tractors as they came off the line and make sure that the HP was not more than 2 HP over the HP stated in the literature. There were a lot of XT's that got out of the factory with 110 - 120HP; later they were set at 96HP coming off the line, which ended a lot of the gear problems.

I had an xt190 series I for several years. Did have a cog out of a bull gear when I bought it. When going to the salvage yard for a gear is when I learned about the upgrades. I opted for the std. gear as that was the least amount of work and money to get it going and I did not plan to use it for heavy tillage all the time. I did pull a 5-16 plow over 40 acres each of 5 years and appropriate sized tillage tools also with no problem. However, about 2 years later the tractor started jumping out of 4th gear when I slowed down for a curve on the road etc. Was told this is common also. Kind of dangerous if pulling a heavy load and going down hill. I got by by hooking a tarp strap to the shift lever to hold it in until I got rid of it. Keep in mind this was a well used tractor when I bought it and I bought it cheap knowing it would have some problems. It was a very good tractor economically and power wise. Replaced it with an AC 7000. Night and day difference but $5000 more money.

This same dealer also has a 7000 which looks "brand new"---and is asking $13K. He wants %5500 for the 190xt.

I would recommend you stay away from any and all AC tractors, unless you are in the D-17 era or older. Specially those 7000 series AC's, talk about a tight cab.

FYI - A year ago this past April I bought a real nice AC7000 with cab/heat/air/duals with power shift from an AGCO/MF dealer in the $7500+ range. Tractor probably had about 6+k hours on it when I got it (electric tach had been replaced). With the weather, I havn't been able to use it much though.
