cut it. As we say here in hayseed country "it will be better than a snow ball"

I still have hay to cut here in RI and have been
fooled by the weathermen. The orchard grass is
past peak but I have buyers waiting to pick it up.
Don't worry about brown tops as the best part of
the plant is the bottom. I need some overseeding
on this field anyway and lots of seed will shake
off the hay when I process it. You'll be fine.

Sure, it may be old now. But like my grandpa used to say- it's better than snowballs. Take it off now and you should easily get another crop. If you're worried about quality, feed some of each crop at the same time. Or alternate one day good stuff one day bad. It's not a total loss, just not top quality. Chad

I know hay's a little different from beans, but I didn't plant beans till the last week of June last year... Little late? Yes.... But it all turned out ok, as I don't do it for a living, I do it for a hobby.... (but my grandad is a full time farmer, and he said a lot of the same type of comments I read by others)

Just remember, good or bad, chalk it up for a learning expirience (cause no matter how things turn out, you learn)... and myself being 22 years old, I have a lot of learning to do before I can claim that I have any kind of expirience.

Good Luck

Mark, get your hay as soon as you can and never mind the snotty answers you got below. Of course it should have been done sooner. Some people just like to show how smart they are by putting others down. Live and learn.

thanks les, and all those who replied positively, ya basicly reasured me of what i had figured, that it was not ideal but still not complete junk, this is my first year haying, my father used to hay years ago with friends but not since i was about 2 or 3 years old, i could have asked him, but wanted your opinions here too. and like i said i should have done it the week of fourth of july, but had the usual picnics planned, and also i wanted to wait as long as i could on this field cause it is very wet on the road leading into it from all this rain we had, and that week i also had to help install a pool, so i would have been pretty strung out on time, should have done it but didnt, lost the gamble i suppose ya could say, but i aint making a living off this so i can chock it up to a learning experience

We have all been their, done that. You might get a big surprise when you get it in the bale. That hay I was talking about, they baled some of it yesterday and it looks quite decent.

That was your call. It is always more fun to play, even with a bad headacke than to work, even if there is a holiday involed. Now what you got left doesn't have enough nourishment for a grasshopper.

Weather permitting forage crops should be cut for hay when the 1st flower buds open in the clover or alfalpha. Protein will be at max. Can even be plenty strong for livestock until acclimatized to it. Takes the longest to dry then when the stems are still filled to max with moisture. Better to harvest a green hay a week later than brown/black hay early however.

Your hay should have been cut long ago, everyone is afraid to get it wet! Well as my neighbor used to say, "you can't put the dam stuff up and it tied to the ground". Enough said!!

I don't know what front and back wheels had to do with your question. You should feed some protein with the hay. you don't say what kind of grass as different grass matures at different times. Get in touch with you extension service in your area, they can and will be very helpful. As for some of the other answers some people were just born smart alec's.

the stems don't amount to anything anyway. The blades of the grass is where it's at cut it

Yes it will not be top quality for protein. But for anything but dairy cattle it will be ok. Anything dry is better than mold. Some years you have no choice but to wait for the weather!! You gotta make hay with the weather though holiday or not!!

Primarily because of traction, and sinxe virtually all earlier tractors were rear drive only, that's where the big wheels and tires went. Also, big tires on the front would block a lot of what you can see. Especially important in row crop tractors in the early days, when the operator didn't sit up so high.

Also..... have you ever tried to steer a tractor w/o powersteering .....that has huge front tires? Not too easy to do!!!!

Plus, big tires make it quite hard to turn a tight corner!

They are cutting a 60 acre field near me that should have been cut 3-4 weeks ago, so its a bit past its 'sell by date'.Better to cut it now and get it 'made' well, than to have cut at the 'right' time and have ruined and full of mould by rain (but it will be a long way off being perfect). One thing, if the weather is on your side, it will soon make!
They will eat it before they will eat their front feet.

As the hay matures the stems get woodier,or as some call it stemy(tougher). They are stronger because of the higher lingnin content of the stem. It's just nature they have to hold up more weight once the seeds fill out. Not the most pallatable of feeds, but not the worse either.

Tops being brown the plant has matured. being that way the quallity is going down. If the weather is cold it will slow this. But any way if you don't cut it then it will effect your product next cutting.
