What is the difference between a Fordson F and a Fordson N. I have a 1924 English Fordson and would like to know how to tell what model it is. Thank you for your time and trouble.

Sounds like you have an American model F Fordson with an Engligh model N fuel tank, this is not uncommon. In the mid to late 30's all the replacement parts came from england and if someone purchased a new fuel tank in 1938 you would have gotten a tank with the english tag in the back. Fordsons were made in ireland in the early 20's but i don't believe that any of these found thier way to the U.S., They were sold in europe. The difference between the F and the N: F:grey tractor, red wheels English N: blue tractor orange wheels. ( irish N 29-32 is grey )
F: buzz coil ignition N: magneto ignition
f: no governor N: has a governor
there are many other differences but those are the mose obvious.

I don't know how to explain the radiator sides. the Ladder radiator was phased out in march of 1919. I have seen some mid 1919 tractors that have the outline of the holes from the casting pattern being altered. but not partially recessed.

The F fordson never was factory equipped with a water pump. Many after-market companies made and sold them. they would mount between the engine and the radiator, under the radiator top tank.

hope this info helps,
ADAM

Thanks Adam. my fordson has a governor, and the water pump is on the left side of the motor just under the generator. With it having a governor it must be an N as your reply would indicate, that helps. I must say out of all the tractors I have this one has been the most fun finding information on. Also the color of the tractor is odd. Now I must mention that I did get to speak to the original owner before he passed on, and he said that except for changing the wheels from steel to ruber, that the tractor is original. Plus the second owner, the one I purchased the tractor from claims he also made no changes. But I wonder if I was told a stright story. The paint on this fordson tractor is orange, the fenders are wight or light gray, and the tool boxes inside the fenders are green. there is only one coat of paint on the tractor and most of it has been replaced by rust. Once again thanks for all the help I'm getting on identifying my fordson tractor. Any other comments would be welcome.

Tanks for the reply. I am the third owner of this Fordson and the original owner said that when he bought it new, that it came from England. the s/n starts with 415---. that means it was mad in June of 1924. this tractor is all original and it's history can be traced. unfortunately the original owner passed on after I purchased the Fordson, but I can still talk to his son. in addition the back of the two cavity fuel tank is stamped Ford Motor Company Ltd. England, it also has the ladder sides on the radiator, these are very deep impressions but they are not open all the way through. This tractor has a front mount distributor, that the original owner told me came with the tractor and it has a pressurized water pump on the left side of the motor. It has a five hole draw bar and it has the rear fenders with the tool boxes. plus it has the manul and the original tools in the tool box. If there is anything else I can add please let me know. Thank you four trouble.

Alan,
i looked thru my lists. there were many changes to the Fs & Ns over their production lives. i always thought water pumps & dizzys were accessories. urs may have been a show special or some special model with all the add ons. production moved to different continents & different factories in those continents over the life of the tractor. if u need more info let me know. manuel

I have, I think, a 1924 Fordson. Has steel wheels and supposedly starts with gasoline and subsequently runs on kerosene. It has been fully restored at a cost of $11,000. It's a 4 cylinder. It has the number 1536 with a 6 below it on the engine. It has the number1674C on the axel housing under the seat. Any idea where I can get more info to include selling price

I have talked to the man I bought the Fordson tractor off of since the original owner passed away. The man I bought the tractor off of said that the tractor was not original as was first said, that it had been repaired, and the front axle and wheels were off of a 1937 ford truck. They fit well and look the part. So at first glance I missed this. But on a good note the tractor is a 1924 Fordson it dose have the original radiator, (as I am told.) It dose have the boat tail fenders with the tool boxes in them and they were ordered with the tractor as an option, so it had to have been ordered late 1924 or early 1925 to be able to get the fenders and the optional belt pulley was ordered at the same time. As far as I can tell the fuel tank must have been replaced for the back of the tank reads, Ford Motor Company, Ltd. England. And these fuel tanks were not available untill 1928 from Cork Ireland or from 1932 when the plant in Dagenham, Essex, England started production. Since the model N Fordson did not appear untill 1928 in Cork, Ireland, my 1924 Fordson must be a model F, and by the S/N it was made in Michigan. Please if anyone can add to this or send me a correction I would appreciate it. I am still looking for proof that this is a model F. I am also looking for any repair information so if anyone knows of a good source, please e-mail me at nichojn@valunet.com Thank you for all your time and trouble.
