On the right side of my Fordson Super Major, near the brake pedals, is a lever that looks like the emergency brake in an older truck. It has a ratcheting action when I pull it back, and has a release button on the top. I can't determine what it does. Can anyone help me?

yes it is a handbrake that works on the transmission. multiplates immersed in oil.
if left on the plates can weld together, not good if this happens!

Thanks, Mark. That's very helpful. I would not have guessed it to be a brake that works on the transmission. I'll use it sparingly.

Its the hand brake. Make sure its released when driving the tractor or damage will result.

Thanks, Steven. So I take it that this is a hand brake in addition to the normal brake lock mechanism that is located in the same vicinity. Why the redundancy, I wonder.

do not use at all when moving, i have spent much time reparing on which has been used and the guide pins sheered off and the whole transmission seized solid! it can be repaired without splitting the gearbox but only with small hands! Forget to check it is off at your peril.

Thanks for the heads-up, Alan. I'm wondering why Fordson put such an attractive nuisance on this tractor in the first place. And what does it do that the brake lock doesn't do just as well?
