General Information on Super Major

I bought a Fordson Super Major this morning. It has been repainted, but looks as though it had the original orange wheels. I am assuming it to be a '61 or '62. I have never owned a tractor before, and all of my information is gained through reading these kinds of chat interchanges. What should I expect this tractor to do for me? I have a hilly five-acre plot in the Pacific Northwest (USA) with lots of sage and small junipers. I hope to use a brush hog to cut down much of the growth, and will use a box scraper to level some land for gardens. Is it possible to fit a Koyker or Allied loader to this tractor? As I look at it, there doesn't seem to really be much of a frame. Any information on these points will be much appreciated.

My Super Major has Ford front loader and backhoe. These are mounted on extra frame members which fasten under the rear axle housings and are bolted into the transmission case and front cross members. I would think any others would have to be attached similiarly. Hope this helps.

RT, if you go back several pages you'll find a discussion on the weight of the Super Major. It appears that they come in between 4400 and 5200 lbs. My bet is the latter, and that you'd be better off erring on the high side.

Thanks, Don. That helps a lot. Let me ask if the extra frame members were specially made for your tractor, or if they are off-the-shelf items available somewhere. Jack (Woolman)

They were made by Ford as part of an installation kit for the Fordson Major. The kit also included a hydraulic pump, tank, etc. I do not think there are any generic or universal loaders as the tractor installation points are so different. It is possible to do your own modifying and adapting but basically you need a loader which (perhaps with a kit) was made for the Fordson Major. Best of luck.

Thanks again, Don. If any of you other Fordson fanatics out there know of a loader, or of information on how to adapt a generic loader to this tractor, please let me know.
