Ford Major/ Just Old Tired?

I ran this old girl ('55 +/-) for twenty years, mostly mowing 30 acres of meadow hay annually without ever much going wrong. Last year I had to replace the injector pump but it ran fine after that. Since then a neighbor bought the tractor and has run into several problems. First he determined the the fuel pump/filter inline before the injector pump was bad and replaced it with an electric fuel pump. (Does the injector pump require pressurized fuel?). Then he altered the timing. Now he says it has no power, no oil pressure at idle, and compression is so low you can turn the engine by hand with the fan. Additionally he said it is sometimes exhausting unspent fuel and occasional flames. Does anyone recognize these signs? Are they indicative of a rebuild necessary? I'm considering buying the tractor back and will try some mowing this weekend (it starts and runs, only with the described symptoms). Any suggestions on what to look for to assess the condition would be appreciated. -Dug

By the sound of it the only thing wrong with that tractor is the fool who bought it. Yes the fuel system is under about 5lbs pressure. If there ever was a fault with the lift pump it can be serviced or replaced. The electric pump will not do harm though.

I wonder why everyone seems to adjust the timing on diesel engines. This should be set at the manufactures setting and left well alone. There are lots of posts from people who adjust the position and get themselves in dire trouble. I would suspect that this is the cause for your flame and fuel from the exhaust.

Please buy that tractor back and get her to somewhere where she is loved and cared for. She's an old lady now and they don't like being moved to new homes.

I would buy it back (for less) and it's probably a simple fix Replace the electric fuel pump with the original ,you can buy overhaul kits or a new one , check the timing and you should be ok, ,since i don't imagine any mechanical damage occured during his short ownership , they are such tough tractors and a simple easy fix good luck
