FPM Worth Repairing ???

I am inheriting a Fordson Power Major along with the farm that I am purchasing. At this time the FPM will crank but not start. I was told by the guy who is trying to fix the tractor at this time that it has had a rough life and that when he found it the engine was full of water. He has rebuilt the motor without buying a rebuild kit for it. Do you guys / gals think that it would best to just sell the tractor or have the motor rebuilt with a rebuild kit?? I have a diesel mechanic buddy who is will to tear it apart and rebuild the motor correctly. Being a newbie to tractors I am wondering if it is going to be worth putting the money into this tractor or buying another tractor. I am going to be using the tractor to mainly bush hog and disc as needed.

On a side note I ordered the repair manual from ytmag today but I would like to know if anybody knows what gauge the wire is between the starter solenoid and the key and what kind / size of battery needs to be used in this tractor ???

Thanks,
Scott

Any large 12 volt battery that fits will be ok but remember it's(Should be ) positive to earth ,
It does not have a starter solenoid ,cos its done manually ,unless it's been altered , so any reasonable wire will do. Very good tractors, well worth repairing , they start well, are tough and will only go up in value in the future.

They are good tractors. The price you got that for means you can spend a lot of money and still be in front. If you do spend what it would cost to buy one in good order you will know its rebuilt.
