Found my water in the oil problem to be leaking o-rings on the 2 center sleeves (liners). When I pulled the pistons out, found what looks to be a sign of ether (starting fluid) or over heating damage on the pistons. Extreme scoring or melting above top ring on all pistons, and all the way down one side of one of the pistons.

I now have a need to go ahead with a rebuild. When ordering the engine kits, they ask me which crankshaft I have. Is there an easy way to tell whether I have the one with the 2.0" I.D or 2.015" I.D timing gear without taking it to a machine shop?? .015" is too small to gauge without a micrometer. Just wondering if there is something stamped on the crank somewhere.

The crankshaft looks to be in great condition. I am trying not to have to completely remove the engine as I am having to do this work outside and do not have the equipment to remove the engine. Thanks in advance. Robert

Robert,

If you want to do this job correctly to insure success. You will need to take the block, head and the crank to an experienced machine shop. The crank will need to be checked for wear and probably will need to be worked. The machinist will take it down and tell you what size bearings to buy after he works it. He値l almost tell you what size thrust washers to get as well. The sleeves need to be pressed out. When the new ones are pressed in they will need to be bored to size. They are re-bored after they are pressed in to insure size and to insure that they are true. Lastly, you値l want him to make sure the head is flat. The kit will come with springs and values.

I壇 go find you a garage to put your girl in; you値l need an engine hoist as well.

Tony

I think you have the Major confused with the Dexta. The Major engine has wet sleeves instead of semi-finished dry liners. They do not have to be bored after installation.

The 2.015 inch is stepped. You can see the step when you take the timing gear of. What year is your tractor? Also look for the part number on a web of the crank. It wil start with E1ADDN. Give me that no and I will see if I can ID it.

The tractor is a 1956 according to the SN. I will get the part number off of the crank this week.

Regarding the sleeves (liners), if I buy the kit that includes the pistons, rings and sleeves, aren't they a matched set that will not require reboring?? If not, then I have no choice by taking the block to a machine shop. Lucky me...

After removing the pistons, it looks like this thing has been rebuilt, at least partially, before. The #1 piston is in the best shape (minimal scoring) where the other 3 have what looks to be partial melting of the piston between the top of the piston and the top ring groove. Oddly enough though, the sleeves are in good shape, compared to the pistons. The #1 connecting rod has a different # than all of the rest and the nuts for the rod bolts are 11/16" whereas all of the others are 9/16".

Thanks for all of the fine support everybody is offering. Thanks, Robert
