Hi Y'all, I just aquired a 1961 Fordson Power Major with a Wain Roy Loader and backhoe.Does anyone happen to know the HP on one of these, it's a 4 cyl diesel with an 8-speed trans. Also has a simms injector pump do I have to check the lubricating oil in it or is it lubricated through the engine oil system.
how is the timing set on the injector pump she smokes pretty good and don't seem to be using much oil.
Sorry about all the questions but I'll have a ton more thanks
Jim K

Jim,I have a '61 fordson super major, strong tractor.the timing mark is 23 deg.btdc.to achieve this;take loose the #1 fuel injection tube, turn the eng.over until fuel shoots out,STOP!Take cover off the timing hole(located at the back of engine)with a flat screw driver back the flywheel up until the timing mark comes up,line up the small mark on the bellhousing, and the 23btdc mark.go to your fuel inj.pump, loosen the 2 bolts, and line up the marks, tighten bolts, and fire her up.my tractor has the perkins 4cyl.eng.also,with 8speed tranny, are you sure yours isn't a super major? cw

I have info on the bit you are on about and could e-mail them if required.
First what type of simms is it does it have to pipes going from it to the intake manifold?
the timing cover is to the rear of the engine at the bottom of the bell housing and is smaller than a box of matches with one 1/2" Hex screw holding it on inside will be the flywheel with the markings on and the there should be a line on the pump bracket and a line on the coupling boss if you get back i will look up the settings

Your tractor has 47 PTO HP. I've never had a major, but the tractors that I do have with Simms pumps require oil and it is important. The drain is in the bottom, the fill on top and the level plug is on the side. The timing is something that I have never done and is probably beyond me. If you Major is like my later Fords there is a plate in front of the pump. Remove the plate and the timing gears are exposed. From here you are on your own. Good Luck.
