Well, it looks like I get to add a Fordson F and the rear half of another Fordson F tractor to my small collection. I asked the guy if they would roll and he said yes, but not very easy. in the tool box was an extra worm gear with a bearing on one end and splines on the other. This got me to thinking a bit on how to make them roll a little easier for loading on a trailer, and hence this question. Can the worm gear be removed from the rear axle with out a ton of work? Not sure, but I thought it could be removed by taking the draw bar off to get to the worm gear. Any one ever done this? Also, I couldnt find a tag anywhere so that I could figure out what year they were built.Do they have a tag somwhere? Thanks a bunch for your time.

No problem poping out the worm, just messy. Have something under the tractor to catch that real nasty stuff. Should roll much easier.

Thanks, I was hoping that removing the worm gear wasnt too big of a deal and that it would help make it roll easier, I havent got back to it yet to try it out. Steve T

The serial number is hand stamped in the block between the front (closest to the radiator) two manifold ports. It is often obscure due to rust and/or layers of paint. If your tractor has had a replacement block in it's lifetime, there may be no number at all.

As to the shaft, you might make it a little easier to roll without it but it is doubtful you'll gain much. I say this because my '23 F rolls pretty easily by hand around the shop. Check the oil in the transmission and see if it is the consistency of tar. Now that would make a difference. More to your point, the only difficulty I can see would be if the double bearings have to be driven out of the housing.

I was thinking that the oil would most likely be really thick and tar like but mostly I wasnt sure about how hard it would be to move this tractor because of the worm and gear assy. Most worm drives have a tendency to not move (lock up) if you take the power away (Engine running) I know little to nothing about Fordsons, so this is the first step. Thanks for your responce.
