My dexta starts and runns fine with a pull. When I bought it the guy started it off a battery connected directly to the starter as the wiring was a bit dodgy. Since getting it home I cannot get the starter to turn the engine over fast enough not even jumping it off our fork lift that has a 4cyl major engine in it or off my Landrover Discovery. Does the starter need a rebuild? The guy mentioned he cleaned the starter up, could he just have bodged it to sell?

These tractors started with out major changes to the wiring as they rolled off the assemble line.
first check all connections this means removing them one by one cleaning with wire wool or sand paper clean the battery posts replace washers that may be under the heads of the earth bolts and any main fixing cable bolts if still not joy and egine still turns slow after a minute check all fix connections again with the hand to see if any are hot but be careful? if this test has passed the the starter is suspect this could be a sticking brush or worn out brushes a worn com poor or storting feild coils. the other thing is dry or worn bearings these will alow the armiture to come into conntact with the feild pole and slow the motor down making it also hot. check to see rub marks.

Take the band cover off and make sure all the brushes are free to reciprocate. If one is stuck, it will cause the symptoms you describe.
