A friend of mine has just aquired a 1963 Super Dexta dsl, 3 speed hi-lo trans, NO pwr steering, starts & runs (I believe it has a 144 ci Perkins Dsl). It needs some TLC, cleaning, tune up, paint, rear tires etc. He plans to use it for bush hogging and drive way up keep (blade & box blade). What size would be recomeended for this size tractor?? (5-6ft hog, 6- blade, box blade???)

Can any of you help with some of the good & bad points fo this model. Are parts still availible?? What the approx HP?? Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Charlie - I bought my "Super" in Nov. of 1963 and still use it. Great little tractor that will easily handle a 5' bush hog and a 7' blade. The engine is basically a 152 cu. in. Perkins that is bullit proof. Just remember to change the oil and filters every 100 hrs.IMPORTANT - also change the oil in the injection pump at the same time - never allow the pump to run dry.

Tony - Super Dextas have a Simms injection pump which has its own lubrication oil. On the top, close to the front of the pump,is a plug(15/16"wrench) which is the filler hole.On the side of the pump, you'll find a small, fine threaded bolt which is the oil level plug (1/2"wrench),with a similar bolt(drain)on the bottom of the pump.Drain and top up with the same oil as you're using in the engine. Over the years, there's been a lot of these pumps damaged because this oil level was either ignored or people were not made aware of its importance. Really just another area to service on a regular basis. Those pumps are very dependable as my Super has in excess of 12000hrs and my 5000 with 10000 hrs on Simms pumps.

Pneumatic govenors were never on Supers so I can't comment on their maintenance. I believe the main problem with them was a deteriating internal gasket/diaphram.If you do a search on this site, that problem was addressed some time ago.
