I have an older Fordson Major Diesel tractor that has developed what I think, is a serious problem. It starts & runs for approx 10 minutes, but when it warms up, the motor seems to "seize" up and the tractor stops running. After this happens, I cannot even turn the tractor over until it has cooled down completely.

There is lots of oil, and the Radiator coolant is as it should be...

Could it be the oil pump or ?

Any suggestions wil lbe appreciated.

Please email me back with any suggestions.

This might be grasping at straws, but I had a 1959ish Major that would run like a charm for a while then all of a sudden it would throw smoke & run like timing suddenly changed. When this happened, you'd hear a rattle around the injection pump. Turns out it was an external connection around injection pump had broken(I forget the name of it) Salvage yard had one for like $20 & they said this was a common problem of Majors.

What kind of oil pressure does it have when running?

I'm not 100 percent sure... The oil pressure guage has been disconnected.

I think I may have bigger problems though. Went to start it on the weekend and it would not turn over at all, the fan would kick over a bit, then nothing....

I'm hoping it was just due ot the cold weather... and low battery, but I'm not sure...

Rob Your probably on the right track with the oil pump. Get a gauge to check the oil pressure, the line can be removed from the engine and a gauge turned into the hole.
I don’t have my shop manual in the house today but I think the minimum oil pressure spec is 35 psi. If I remember right on a used warm engine it takes at least 10 to 15 psi to get oil up to the rocker shaft. If you are below this there are problems. First thing to check is the pressure relief valve, I think the 54 still had it behind the timing gear cover on the front mounting plate, the newer engines have it on the oil pump. If you find this to be the culprit I would pull the bearing caps off the rods and mains, the bearings will probably need to be replaced if not the crank needing a regrind as well.

sorry buddy but it sounds like a main bearing to me. My family had an old chrysler wagon that did the same thing!
