I SEEM TO HAVE TWO PROBLEMS WITH MY SUPERMAJOR 5000,THE FIRST AND MOST WORRYSOME IS A LOUD SQUALLING NOISE WHEN I RELEASE THE CLUTCH AND ATTEMPT TO DRIVE.THIS PROBLEM EXISTS IN REVERSE OR FORWRD GEARS, NO MATTER WHAT IS OR ISNT ENGAGED. THE NOISE SEEMS TO BE COMING FROM THE CLUTCH AREA.OIL PRESSURE IS GOOD. THE SECOND PROBLEM IS THE 3PT LIFT ARMS WILL COME UP BUT WONT GO DOWN UNTIL ENGINE IS SHUT OFF. BOTH OF THESE PROBLEMS STARTED AT THE SAME TIME OVER NIGHT. GUYS I LOVE MY TRACTOR PLEASE HELP ME HELP HER! JEFF PARKS

Jeff,
You did not say whether your tractor was a standard or a "live drive" with a two stage clutch, or whether it will still move. The problem can possibly be one of two things. The Super Major here in England was fitted with a bronze bush in place of the pilot bearing in the fly wheel as standard. This used to dry out and really shriek but was doing little or no harm as it only worked when the clutch was disengaged. If this is the problem, do not worry too much but replace it with a bearing on the next clutch change. Or re grease it with High Melting point or Moly-Grease.
If the sound occurs when you try and drive off and the tractor just stands still, you are going to have to fit a new clutch straight away.

The hydraulics fault you mention is nothing to do with the clutch fault. It sounds like either a sticking control valve or a sticking unload valve.
Try a slightly crewed way of clearing the problem. Lift the seat and at the rear of the auxilary valve chest you should see one of the ram cylinder mounting bolts. A sharp tap on this bolt with a 3lb hammer should cause the lift to go down. If this fails then its a matter of removing the lift and finding the problem. It could be metal particals in the oil caused by the breaking up of the final drive gears.

It sounds to me like the noise could be from the hydraulic pump pressure relief valve. If the control valve is sticking, then pressure would continue to build after the lift arms reached the top. When the relief valve opens, it would make a buzzing or grinding noise. If the tractor does not have live pto, then the pump will stop when the clutch is depressed, stopping the noise.

Nathan,

Good idea! The PRV is just under the drivers right leg on the hydraulic top cover. This could be isolated by taking the PTO out of gear and then seeing if the noise has disappeared.
The control valve has a mechanical "knock off" pin to move it back into the neutral position as the piston edge clears the ram cylinder. If this has dropped out then the problem of not switching off the hydraulic pump could occur. Also the drop control of the lift is controled by a spring. The lever moves the valve to raise and the spring returns it to neutral or drop.
