Hi
My Super Dexta Oil Pressure light has just today started flickering and looks to be building up to stay on. I have shut the engine down to prevent any damage but am now left with the task of diagnosing the problem. Any hints on where to start - things I can test etc ? I guess it's a reasonably tricky job to get at the oil pump if it needs work.
The machine has been working reasonably hard with my flail mower - but not grunting on it

Any knowledge would be appreciated
Thanks
Pat

Thanks to both Paul and MIk for the very helpful advice.

Today I replaced the sender unit with a new one (cost NZD 16.80 - not bad considering what I could have been up for). There was quite a bit of crud down there and it was a wonder the terminator could conduct any current anyway. The new sender unit has a different terminator in any case so I crimped anew one on - the old sender was probably OK and it just needed the terminator fixing.

Paul, I don't seem to have the 8 nuts on the bottom of the sump holding on a round plate. There is one on the front of the engine. I still think it could be worthwhile getting in there and having a bit of a cleanout. Do you think it is worth putting through detergent oil ?

I am currently using the New Holland oil for "older tractors".

Anyway, thanks again. I will be out the day after Boxing day cutting my hay with it and raking and baling very soon after - still in active service. It's not a pretty picture but I look after the bits that count. When I get time I will fix up the bodywork too

Thanks again to you both - if you're ever in NZ I'll buy you a beer
Pat

What you have to think about when putting in any sort of oil that will"clean" the engine is this... over the years, carbon has built up & to an extent could well be keeping tolerances tighter than if the build up wasnt there. Remove it & you may speed up the need for an over haul. I'm glad the fix on the oil pressure light was a cheap one. Good luck with the old girl, they take some stopping if you look after them somewhat. As for the bolts underneath, there may be 6 or eight, I cant quite recall, the plate is just by the oil drain plug. If you can give Me an email I can send you a couple of photo's that will show what I'm talking about. All the best for the festive season, good health to you & yours.

Hi Paul

Yes - I had heard you could loosen things up by doing that sort of thing - I'll leave as is for the moment. My email is - roesward@xtra.co.nz

Is that your Super Dexta on Stefan's website ? Same as mine except that I have grill mounted headlights (when I can find some new ones, and a grill for them to go in) and my exhaust comes out through the cowling. I have a front end loader on mine also

Have a good one tomorrow and look forward to the pictures. I might put a few of mine on the website also although they will probably shock.

cheers

A couple of checks for you to make....
1/Check the oil pressure light wiring. To the extent that you pull the light fitting out of the "dash" and make sure the wiring isnt earthing out. There is an insulator that prevents the wiring under the bulb from earthing directly, if vibration is giving an intermittent earth it may be the problem.Check the wiring all the way to the sender unit which is on the left handside of the engine block. If the wiring is ok( no insulation breaks that might be shorting) then get a new sender unit ( after market they cost about $15 Australian, Ford New Holland want about $45 each). If the light still comes on, see if you can borrow an oil pressure test guage & check what oil pressure your getting at idle & then check when you have done a bit of work with the tractor ( this allows for the oil to thin out a bit as it gets hot )
2/ start the engine & have it just over idle...pull out the dipstick & see if there is any oil spatter coming out.
3/ With the engine over idle speed, put your finger over the breather pipe that comes from the tappet cover down the right hand side of the engine. See if any oil blows out of the dipstick hole.If either of these things has oil coming out of the dipstick, it indicates crankcase pressure, which is a sign of worn rings.
4/ What grade oil are you using? Have you replaced the oil filter regularly or recently? Is the oil filter seated & installed properly?
5/ Drain the oil out of the engine & remove the 8 or so nuts that are under the sump, this will allow you to take off the round plate. On the inside of this plate there should be a wire screen. Have a look inside the screen ( the oil pick up is from inside this area) and see if there are any metal filings in the oil or gunge there. This would indicate case hardening coming off the big end bearing shells. If the shells are worn to a large degree & the gap between them and the cranckshaft is significant, you may be losing oil pressure because the oil is flowing more freely that would be the case with low bearing clearance
6/ If you have to get the oil pump out to overhaul or replace ( replacement cost Me $100 Australian for the pump & $60 for a new idler gear) you will have to remove the front end ( wheels, axle & pivot housing ) to drop the sump to remove th pump. good luck, I hope it's only an oil pressure sender unit or a frayed wire. Let Me know I can elaborate on any thing. Regards Paul

Pat if you are lucky it might be a electrical fault.Best to start at the sender generally located close to the oil filter,if you can lay hands on a oil pr gauge& manually check the oil Pr ,it should be above 20psi at eng idle. Before starting the eng I would check the oil ,oilfilter for any appearance of shiney matal bits, look closely at the oil filter. If that looks ok start up and listen closely for any strange noises ect,if your oil pr on the gauge is very low or none, then you have to look at bottom end oil pr relief valve ect, good luck Mik

I would put a manual gauge on the old girl and see how much the oil pressure is to make sure it is the sending unit. Then if you want to hook the light back up. Take care.
