Gentlemen: I recently purchased 5k super major. looking into wiring and etc. it's mess. Being an Electrical Contractor re-wiring "SHOULD" be a breeze. My question...Should a guy stay with the old generator, voltage reg. and positive ground setup, or should he get an alternator and convert unit to modern day wiring. I'm just curious to the pro's and conn's. I'll be honest, The positive ground setup to me is very strange. Goes against all my wiring methods. So you can understand my hesitation and head scratin'. Thanks for input!!!!Bruce

Have just converted my super major to a Lucas alternator. Had to make new mounting brackets to get belt to line up and I think you would have to do the same with Delco or others. In regard to flattening the battery and re polarising the terminals - this is not necessary - swap terminals on battery cables round, put negative to ground and positive to start solenoid. Everything should work perfectly if alternator is wired correctly.

Convert to negative ground. Install a Delco Remy alternator with the internal voltage regulator. Especially simple , if you are creating a new wiring harness. Hint::: Before you change polarity in the battery, use a slow drain , to take the battery charge to nil, then re-charge battery in a negative ground manner. You can do this by connecting a 1157 bulb or similar across the terminals on the battery. Nothing else requires changing. I did this up-drade to my 1956 Fordson Major & it does an excellent job.!! This also cleans up a lot of mess in wiring , in that the old regulator & all associated wiring is not necessary. Brian
