Greg - It's possible that I still have the switch mechanism from my old starter that I replaced with the 4000 starter. If you're interested I could rummage around and see if I can locate it.

Dave, that would be great, will gladly pay what you think it is worth, nice to know someone else that seldom throws anything away. Let me know and I will give you my address. Thanks, Greg.

Greg - I had a little free time yesterday and I pawed around through all my old stuff. I found lots of items I hadn't seen in years, but unfortunately I didn't come up with the old starter. And I think I've looked in all the likely places. If I do run across it in the near future, I will try to let you know. Maybe you could send me your email so we can communicate without posting messages on this board.

Greg - I'm pretty sure the starter from a Ford 4000 diesel will work. I put one on my super major and I think the major has the same starter. I had to relocate the tool box and install a starter button and the oil dipstick has to be curved slightly to clear the starter but other than that it bolted right up and has worked well for several years.

Thanks guys. I pulled it last evening and determined my chief problem to be that the brass terminal post is broken, dropped it off this morning with my local "starter guy" who thinks he can put a new terminal post in. My next problem is the activation button needs to be replaced, took it apart, but beyond redemption. It appears that substituting could be tricky as activation of the starter prior to full engagement would be hard on flywheel and starter not to mention my ears. I am not ready to give up on the Lucas, but it is sure nice to know I can adapt one off a Ford 4000 diesel. The above problem is aggrivated by the fact that she likes a shot of either( I know bad plan)but that is her nature, I am running out of hands.

greg,i would take it to a good auto electric shop and have them rebuild it,its cheaper than buying a rebuilt one,or go to nearest tractor wrecker and get a used one.
