I just bought a fordson crawler that sat in the woods about 50 years. It's minus tank and steering wheel but otherwise mostly complete. It's like the 1922 Fordson trackson at Don Cloughs website. The serial # is not legible and the patent dates run from aug 20, 1912 to aug 28, 1923. Is there any way of determining its year from this info?
Thanks Smiley

Those patent dates at least get you in the ball park. The Aug. 1923 dates were added around mid 1925 along with the kill switch at the bottom of the timmer quadrant on the dash. So you know you tractor is between 1925 and early 1928 which was the end of american fordson production.
To narrow the date further, in mid 1927 the ports on the block were dropped down about 1/2". Engines before this date have the manifold flush with the head/block surface, while engines after this date (approx. s/n 662000 and later) have about a fingers width of space between the head surface and top of the manifold.
Another clue is the air washer. Air washers before early/mid 1926 have "threaded ears" on the manifold side to bolt the starter tank to, while tractors mid 1926 and newer have a smooth air washer.
Hope this helps a little. If you have more questions let me know. There are a few more areas that can help determine a date but get a little more complicated. Also if you tear the engine apart, mid 1927 engines and later have an oil slinger on the front of the crank, domed pistons, and conecting rods with a cross shaped cross section. All this is assuming the tractor is original and did not have parts changed over the years.

Forget that last comment they do have steering wheels, I was thinking of the major county crawler conversion. Jeff
