Thanks for your response of 5/27/03. Assuming that my FMD is indeed an early unit, without the compression release handle at either the front or rear of the valve cover, where would the release mechanism be located? I really don't see anything that could be a release on this engine! As you recall, I'm suspicious that I have a tractor with a replaced engine. Even after I removed the toolbox that covered the left side engine/trans flange connection, there still was no evidence of a number stamp. If this is a replacement block, could it have been from , perhaps, some kind of truck, or something not bearing the ENFO numbering system? A final note Don/Peter, this tractor is equipped with a 110 volt water heater between the radiator and the block, thus casting suspicion that the tractor was used in during cold, hard starting, winters; and maybe even the result of a freeze-cracked original block? Thanks for your time!!

Dan,

On the early Mark I Dagenham built 220cid diesel engines, look on the right hand side of your engine, at the back of the head near the No. 4 cylinder, several inches behind the fuel filter you may find a small curved handle mechanism coming out of the head with a tightening nut. You loosen this nut and pull out on the curved rod handle to release compression. You push in and tighten the nut again when the tractor has started. All of the later 220 cid's had the compression release lever at the front of the valve cover.
