Howdy, Here in west central Michigan, I've inherited a mid-fifties FMD. The serial number space on the engine block is completely blank, and there is no marking on the flange near the starter, nor a tag on the firewall. I'm assuming that this indicates a replacement engine. If so, is there any other way to ID the year of manufacture? The tractor has no compression release, a "Simms" injecter, the headlights are on the side of the radiator cowl, the voltage regulator is in the instrument cluster box (I hope these hints help). Can any of you enthusiasts out there help me ID this beast? Also, man, it makes one serious clanging noise front the front area of the diesel, but it starts immediately and runs great, whaddya recon I outta check first? Thanx...I'm a beginner...

Dan,

Peter is correct, you'll need to look on the left rear of the engine at the flange connecting the engine and transmission housing. The engine number will be stamped vertically on the engine/transmission bolt flange. It appears from your description that it is an older New Performance Fordson Major. Just as a side note, the older Mark I Majors did have a compression release... just not as convenient as the more common compression release lever located at the front of the valve cover.

Dan You could have a replacement engine or you could be looking for the engine number in the wrtong place. Upto March 1956 the engine number was on the left side of thre tractor, just above and behind the dynamo. After March 56 it was on the right side of the tractor, at the front of the block. Even if the engine number is missing you can still date the tractor by casting codes, which are a combination of letters and numbers cast into the gearbox, rear axle, hydraulic top cover, etc. If you can post a casting code we should be able to give you a date.

Hey Peter, Thanx, man, I appreciate your help! I found a casting number on the bottom of the tranny, right below the "ENFO" logo. The number is -EIADKN 7252-, with the numbers below the letters. Also, behind the dynamo is the casting -P18B-. I hope this info is what you need to ID my machine!
