i have a 1955 fordson major deiseil and i dont any thing about it i have worked on desiel for years in the army but this is diff where is the lever i need to release to get this thing to start there is one on the front of the engine comming out of the valve cover is this it and what do i do with to start my new tractor

danny,the handle on the front of your engine is your compression release,the only reason that handle is there,is for cold winter starting or for a low battery,you may need 2 people for this proceedure,but a long pipe will do, be carefull 2 people are best, lift handle,hit starter, engine should rotate at a high speed,pull handle down as its turing over,if it doesnt start,lift handle while still turning,let engine speed up again,pull down.leave down when started.
