Super Major rev counter

The cable driven (from injector pump) engine rev counter on my FSM has died, serviceable 2nd hand ones are not available (in my area in Australia), and I'm thinking of maybe trying a cable driven rev counter from an older diesel 4WD road vehicle - an old Toyota Hilux or something.

Obviously it would have to be an anti-clockwise instrument, and preferably much the same size as the original. Calibration might be an issue, but if 4WD's also took an output from their injector pump, it might just provide an accurate reading.

Has anyone been down this path, and could narrow my search criteria at the wreckers?

Roger,
looking at the Bareco catolgue the tach cable for the Super Major and the dextas are the same. You might therefore be able to use the Tachometers that Bareco sell. I think they are around 70-80 dollars. Go to the website and have a look:

www.bareco.com.au

The plain Tachometer without speed indication might even be a bit less.

Where are you located? I am in south-east Queensland.

Damon in Australia

Hello Damon - Went to the Bareco website, and the Bareco Instrument Cluster B1270 is an anti-clockwise tacho, so I'll investigate how the RPM of the oil pump which drives it, compares with the RPM of the injector pump which the Super Major uses for it's tacho.

I'm in the Ravensbourne area, but get to Toowoomba and Brisbane a fair bit. I spent a couple of hours at a Brisbane wreckers yard last week, looking at diesel trucks instrument panels, but no joy.

Had a look at your MSN Group site, but got put off by the 'signing up with MS' stuff - so I'll stick with this excellent YTMAG site.

Thanks again for the tip - I never thought about checking which models used the same cable!

Cheers
Roger

Roger,
don't worry about joining up, I just have the site so I can post pictures etc for people to look at. Clancy's Parts in Toowoomba has a far range of parts and also a few Majors that have been wrecked so have a chat with them next time you are in Toowoomba.

Regards,
Damon

Try the UK magazine "Tractors and Machinery" for suitable Adds.

Another idea, take your old cable to an instrument shop, one which sells VDO etc. and they will be able to make you a cable to sample. We do this with good success. Good luck.
