Got non running Dexta started tonight with a little starting fluid, good oil pressure, no throttle response, lots of black smoke, ran rough, never cleared up, would run for a couple of minutes and start to shut down, as if not getting fuel, anothger small shot of either would keep it going, any ideas, thanks,

Sounds like fuel the system is not purged out which basically keeps you at idle feed or starving.

Starting with ether most often makes for darker smoke, as the engine is not heated and combustion is just not complete.
If it ran for more than a few seconds (couple of minutes) then you are getting some fuel.

I would assume you have the oil bath at the right level and have adequate air. I assume.

I say again, your symptom are similar to my old beast before rebuild. But when I heated the intake up, I could get mine to stay running and produce power. Heck I operated it for 6 months like this, the thing was just worn slap out. I worked it pretty hard, at low RPM. I could not rev it over 1400 or it would run away. I even rigged a bleed off of crankcase ventilation and this allowed me to rev up to about 1800. When I tore it down, only one cylinder had all intact rings, the other two, the rings fell out like shelled corn when I pulled the pistons. I attribute this to ether and possibly a previously stuck engine (no evidence on old liners, but likely).

My old beast would not start by itself, it always required ether or the propane torch. I chose the torch and got my parts and sources for machine shop work rounded up. Another reason to use the torch and pull the glow-plug, is that with the intake open, and torch in, the throttle defaults to wide open, so bleeding is easier. I'd insert the plug back to throttle down it until it ran by itself.

My engine too never cleared up, the smoke was always a little dark. Why? low compression.

Additionally, all my injector nozzles were shot, they weren't atomizing, they were pissing fuel. This too could be an issue.

After my rebuild, my smoke is NILL, it starts in one second, just a bump on the starter on even the coldest day here in NC. And power. There is not enough traction to use it all.

I am not there, and don't know all your details, but I'd say the good news is it does in fact run, and likely is a good candidate for rebuild, or better you find something simple, get your smoke to clear up, it produces good power and runs on without any internal work needed.

It has been said on other Fordson Boards NOT TO USE ETHER on the Dexta as it will do severe damage to pistons and related parts "may already be to late for yours" but is most definately worth a rebuild as these are great little tractors and with proper care and maintenance will serve you for many trouble free years!

We are finishing a complete resto on our 59 Dexta and hope to try to post pic's on here soon!
