I have seen what I am told is an original loader for a supermajor. (Round pipes with triangular plates of steel at elbows and solid rod linkage to trip on bucket. Lift and drop main arms only).
I didn't much like it. Is it possible to get other loaders that would fit easily? Any names? Ideally I'd like hydraulic tilt on the bucket as well, but don't know how that would work with my tractor (which only has a "trailer tipper" pipe connection at present). Would I need oil reservoir tanks and PTO pumps etc or can I connect another pipe into the system more directly?
Is it asking too much of a super major(e.g. no power steering) to handle -for instance- what we call (here in the UK) a "Flat 8" bale lifting system. I farm at 1200 ft in one of the wettest parts of the UK (soft ground in winter! - re front wheels a prob?). Or would it be more appropriate to buy another tractor 2nd hand and save the super for baling, tedding, trailer-pulling and dung spreading?...

My super major is fitted with a Ford model 712 loader. The bucket is 6' wide, tips with hyd. and the frame is boxed forms. I like it quite well. It's pump drives off the front but using the rear system works however terribly slowly. I like the pump to deliver about 15 to 20 gpm @ 1800 engine rpm. The internal pump only outputs about 5 gpm. Hope this helps.

P.S. ... I gather you have had no problems with the brakes on your super - or at least not one that keeps coming back?... Is this right?

Thanks for your reply Bill. May I check a couple of things with you?
1. Excuse my ignorance, but when you say your pump runs off the front, does this mean there is a PTO that comes out of the front of the tractor somewhere? I gather you have a pump (and reservoir?) fitted with at least 2 hydraulic "circuits" - lift/lower main booms, and tilt bucket up/down under power.
2. Did you have to modify the 712 at all? And do you know if there are other makes that are very similar?
3. What about steering - do you have/need power steering, or do you find it fine without?

1. Yes, you are correct. Mine uses spicer u-joints and a splined slider at the pump. Some use rubber inserted flex yokes. I prefer this system. The rear end of the shaft has 4 bolts into a purpose designed pulley flange.

2. This was an original equipment mount, I made no mods as it was a factory install. This tractor is fitted with a heavy subframe to accept a backhoe on the rear, the loader mounts to this same frame system.

3. A world class strong man would appreciate power steering with this heavy loader. It will pull the rear wheels of the tractor off the ground if the bucket is wedged into the soil or other heavy lift. Even though I have 800# of wheel weights and a few hundred # of other extras on the rear but no implement on the 3ph. And, my presure pump is worn!
