Dynamo charging -or not.?..

Thanks to the author of the articles on 2 and 3 brush generators for going to the trouble. I'm afraid it still lost me.

My Supermajor has a light showing in the dashboard saying "GEN" when the engine is running, and the battery seems not to be getting charged. Question is - is it the dynamo or the regulator at fault? How to tell?
My local agric engineer -when I took the dynamo to him to test - said it was fine. But when I put it back on the tractor, and took the whole thing to him to test with the engine running, he said something weird is happening cos there is "no output". I have measured it and the results are as in 1. below...

1. What should the voltages be out of the dynamo if it is ok? From the smaller terminal out of the dynamo to the engine block with a voltmeter shows 0.7 Volts, and it is 1.1 Volts from the larger terminal to the block.
2. How (words of 2 syllables!) can I locate the regulator , and how can I test it is working? I have a multimeter with a reasonable range of capabilities.

An urgent response just to get me going would be helpful, and I WILL get the manuals!...
Thanks for any suggestions.

My dynamo was wasted when I got the FSM but I continued to use it as a belt adjuster and put the charger on the battery about once per month. I would keep the keyed switch off except during starting. After about a year I was forced to take action as the pulley went adrift. I then fabricated a proper bracket and converted to a standard Delco alternator with internal regulator. Life is good now.

Once again, thanks for the reply Bill. I understand the "proper bracket" relates to how you had to modify things in order to fit this alternator.
Was it just easier to get an alternator (e.g. couldn't find a new dynamo) or is there something better about it? (Like your regulator was also knackered?...)

Fresh reconditioned Delco alternators can be had for $30 which have the regulator inside. I did not even try to determine if my original reg. was good or bad, it was badly weathered externally. I could easily have "lost" $150 to $200 keeping it original. That was not the highest priority, besides, I could return it to original later if desired. Perhaps I should try to show the mount I constructed in a photo or two. It was not so complex. To answer your other question, I have had no problem with the brakes. Good luck with things.

Thanks for all your answers, Bill. I'm with you on the original vs get it going issue. It's my only tractor at present, and I bought it to work. Right now, the brakes need fixing (Flopped down pedal and lock on immediately they are used), the engine is breathing lots, the radiator water bubbles and froths... I need that luck to get going quickly!

ACK! Yes, I'd say the charging system is a minor issue against what may be combustion gases coming out of the radiator and the coolant coming out of the crankcase as vapor (I'm making some assumptions here). I think you will be seeing the internals sooner rather than later. The brakes are not so hard to access, I'd say have a look. The problem may become obvious, maybe just need cleaning and lube of cam components.
