One of my "project" tractors has cracks between the four cylinders. But not into the sleeves. What do you suggest? Weld, ignore, replace the block, or sell everything? Is there another brand of motor that fits the bellhousing? Thank you for your reply.

I have been told that any block from '52 to '64 will work with minor mods to the throttle linkage. However your tractor is a 1959 is one of the high hp versions of this engine and any earlier engine prior to 1958 would mean a drop in power. I would go for the later engines if it was my tractor.

I have one running 1961 FSM.I have found at least one other 1959, but the loader and backhoe are totally shot, but it runs and it is a Roadless. Most everything else around here is broke or older.I found a non-running 1959 Roadless but I hate to steal the engine out of it and the motor is stuck so it would be a gamble anyway.

Unfortunately that is something that is very common with the old majors. With those cracks, the headgasket wont seal properly. I think you need another block, you should be able to get a decent second hand block for not too much money. Dont put a different type of engine in, you'll want to try and keep it as orginal as possible.

The block is stamped with a number for that year so I would need another 1959 block. Does the other years interchange with this year. 1952-1964, right?

Im not totally sure. I know that a Mk1 (51-57) block will not fit a mk2(57-60) sump, so maybe its the case with mk3 sumps. I would really try and get the appropriate block for the year of the tractor or you could come up against some really wierd problems.

Any luck with your finding an engine block? I have a 59 FMD that needs a total rebuild. If I can't find the parts I need, I may just part out the tractor, including the block.Let me know how you faired with your block search. Tim
