Hi We are restoring a 59 Dexta and have had the engine gone thru completelythe problem we are having is that about 3 minutes or so into start up the engine tries to seize up on us we let it sit for about 1/2 hour and it fires right back up until about another 3 or so minutes the tries to set up again! we have pulled the timing cover off and each time it stops almost in the same spot as previous,I will say that when we bought the overhaul kit while installing one of the new sleeves one broke and we replaced it with another one supplied by the same companyI am thinking there might lie our problem but not sure as I am thinking a tolerance problem here when cold is fine but heat and expansion eliminates any tolerance in that one cylinder due to not being matched to the one piston "hence lock up" we are goning to be pulling it back down again tomorrow or tuesday and try honing the cylinders and see where that goes! any other thoughts or advice is more than welcomed on this as we are loosing more and more hair everday over this problem! LOL! thanks in advanced.

Well we are still in need of help here as we have gone back over the engine again and the engine is still running for a short period and then the rpm's slow down till the engine stops and for about a minute or so it is locked up but after the engine sits for a few minutes it will crank up and run again for a few minutes and does it again we have rechecked everything that we can possibly think of IE ring gap rod/main cap direction correct size bearings timing etc it all falls within specs of the manuals it was the F3.144 engine but was rebored for the 152 size we are going to tear it back down again and check the wrist pins but not really sure if that it either ANY HELP would be greatly appreciated thanks!

Be sure to check the end gap on the piston rings. If there is not enough gap, it will lock up when the engine gets hot.

When you installed the crank spacers, did the notch on the spacers face the bearing?

While I have not personally seen this, I was told:

When I was at the machine shop, the machinist cautioned me (long tale-said he lost a Perkins) about installing the crank spacers, and that if they are put in backward, which they will fit, they will cause the engine to lock up. He said the notch should always face the bearing so it will oil.

While your problem may be something else, I feel I should pass this on.

Wayne.

Todd,
Did you have the sleeves honed out to spec? Check these really good, because they could have honed them out bigger at the top than at the bottom. The sleeves that come from the factory still have to be honed to spec. This will cause what you describe. Also did you check your bearings with plastic gauge when you installed them? You might have a bearing trying to seize on you. My first guess would be the sleeves weren't honed out to spec. When I overhauled my dexta this happened to me. If I was going to take the head off I would also take the oil pan off to and check the bottom end with plastic gauge. You can get plastic gauge at any Napa store for nearly nothing. Did you drain the oil out and look at it for metal in the oil? If it started and ran for 3 min. without missing I would think it would be in time. Keep us posted and let us know if we can be of anymore help. Burrhead knows alot about this, but he is away right now at a funeral. Take care.
