Holley 295 Help Needed

I have a 1925 Fordson with the Holley 295 Vaporizer. Recently, I had to pull the vaporizer off. When I replaced it, a problem developed. When I turn the fuel on to fill the bowl, fuel begins to leak from between the vaporizer plates and onto the exhaust clamp (and eventually, into the exhaust pipe). I never had the problem prior to pulling the vaporizer. I've adjusted the float as low as it can go; float valve cuts off the fuel when bowl is about 1/3 full. Despite this the fuel continues to leak out from the plates. The problem get worse when I crank, as more fuel get sucked out of the bowl and between the plates (full choke or no choke - the fuel still pours out). The tractor has become almost impossible to start - no doubt a function of flooding.

Have a another problem - most likely connected to the first. Have experienced an immense amount of backfiring with the tractor. When it backfires, water sprays from the washer and fuel will run from the main air supply tube (in the vicinity of
