Hi Folks! I could use a bit of help. Im having a problem with the coolant bubbling back out of the rad, cold or hot. Keep in mind the rad cap dosen't close tightly. Shes a 57 FMD. I can operate her for about 2 hrs before I have to refill the rad. Any ideas out there? By the way, I live in Canada and I started her on Tues 22 Jan 03 at -20c. Shes very good to me. Thanks Jim S.

Sounds like a head gasket to me too. I had a similar problem some years ago with my Super Major. I installed several head gaskets and none lasted very long. Finally I realized that there were supposed to be shims under the cylinder liners that were missing, and when I rebuilt the engine and installed those, I had no further problems. The upper lip of the cylinder is supposed to sit above the surface of the block by a small amount, mine were flush. Shims brought the liners up a bit (.005, if I remember right) and allowed the head gasket to seal properly. Something to check on your major, that is if the major and super major are similar with respect to cylinder shims.

Well, so far I got the head off and all looks well. The shims are there and the gasket is on order. The front and back exaust port was so dirty it they were only half open. Ill keep all posted on the progress. Thanks jim S.

place a straight edge across the lip of the cylinder liners and with a feeler gauge measure the clearance above the block surface. There should be about 5 thou of liner above the block.

I will check the clearance to ensure I have about 5 Thousand. If not, is difficult to change the sleeves? Cheers, Jim S.

Sounds like a head gasket. There is a breach between the cylinder & a water gulley. Pressure from the cylinder enters the water gulley & pushes bubbles through to the only opening....your radiator cap. If it was mine thats what I would consider the problem as & I'd replace the head gasket before I overheated her to the point where the head had to be planed or water entered a cylinder ( water doesnt compress & that doesnt sit well with the piston moving inside an enclosed cylinder). Good luck
