Hello all,
I have a Fordson Power Major which I have just removed the head from. (It was blowing water from the radiator). I have a few questions on what I should do next.Firstly there was a small amount of surface rust in the No.1 cylinder which I would assume is where the problem has come from. I have removed the rust with scotchbrite and sprayed it with oil. Do I remove the build up from on the head and do I remove the injectors, or can I just clean around the injectors. Can I clean out the injectors at all eg blow air through them. Next, should I flush the block with diesel or something to remove any oil sludge in the sump ( ie flush it through from the top of the block.) Or should I go the whole hog and remove the sump or don't worry about it and just drain the oil as normal.(The sump looks like it would weigh a fair bit as it is nearly half the tractor!)It also seams as though the oil is not being pumped up to the head very well. Is this normal or could there be a blockage somewhere. (The oil pressure usually starts of at about 40psi and then drops to 20-25 when hot.)Lastly what is the order for tightening the head bolts down?
Thanks for your help!
Regards,
Shane.

Hi Shane, The Fordsons actually have a engineered blockage in the oil ports to the head. The camshaft has a port cross drilled into the center bearing, once every revolution when lined up with the ports in the block it allows a squirt of oil up to the head. If the rocker shaft is wet and a little oil is flying around when running its OK. If it is dry get back to me.

According to the repair manual the injectors should be removed before the head is taken off to prevent dirt entering to the injection holes. You should take them off before trying to clean the area near them. Do not try to clean the holes in the injectors. Instead take them to a place where the opening pressures and the spraying patterns could be tested by a professional. The performance of the motor depends on the condition of the injectors.

I don't think that taking the sump off is necessary. And I wouldn't be too concerned about the oil pressure. It is almost always low in old equipment.

The tightening sequence starts from the center and goes gradually toward the edges. Do it in three stages and increase the torque every time. The final torque is 85-90 ft.-lbs. if my memory serves me correctly.

Does the head need to be retightened after a certain amount of running hours and does the engine need to be "run in" somehow?
Thanks,
Regards,
Shane.
