Dexta Clutches!

After purchasing a 1959 dexta in good conditon i was told that it had new clutches in it. It engages gear properly but when the clutch is pressed to stop it at times it still (although weakly) moves until the brakes are jammed on, then it is hard to get out of gear, even with the clutch pedal on the floor!!. Another problem is the second clutch, when the clutch pedal is pushed to the floor the PTO has to be forced into work, similarly when it is turning and the clutch is pressed all the way down it does not stop until the lever is again forcibly moved until the drive disengages. the clutch linkage is in the correct hole for the dual stage clutch (the rearmost hole on the clevis) do you think the clutches just need wearing in or are they shot??

You might want to make sure it's adjusted right. If you have a book on it you can adjust it by what it says. I'd do this first before I broke it apart. It may be all you need to do to it. Look under the tractor and see if any oil is leaking out of the bell housing, there's a little weep hole in the bottom and if it's leaking it will come out of it. If it is then you will have to do like Scott said. Hope this helps.

The front trans. seal is dripping on the clutch disc, so it will need split again to replace the seal and disc.

Matty,

Where can you get the input seal?

My Ford-New holland dealer cannot get the part, nor can I find it on-line.

Secondly, it appears that to replace the seal, I remove the release bearing, remove the lacing wire and 5 bolts holding the input flange the release bearing slid on, and the seal is inside the flange, with the seal surface riding on the 17 tooth PTO input flange. I am basing my thoughts on the picture at:

Am I looking at this picture right?

Looks like I fabricate a new gasket, put in the new seal and re-install the parts. RIGHT?

Wayne
