I'm doing a sleeve job in my 54 major diesel. I've read a lot in the archives about a sleeve sealer, but no one identifies a product by name. Also, can someone suggest an engine assembly lube by name. Thanks for the help, guys!

The '54 sleeve seals on the flange. It doesn't use O-rings like the later models. I used Permatex number 1 the brown stuff that doesn't harden like a rick. There is not need for any lubricant to set the sleeve on the top. You can use regular grease on the lower O-ring so that it doesn't pinch when you install the sleeve. Make sure the sleeve protrudes above the block about .002-.004" so that the clamping preasure of the head will help seal it.

As for the engine assembly lube, use Petroluim Jelly, it does a very good job of lubricating and also disolves fast in the oil. Most engine rebuilders use PJ with no problems. I would also be a good idea to pack the pump with PJ so that it doesn't starve right a way and will pump oil faster the first time.

Hope this helps,
Heli

Some people dont use a sealer but I use a very high temp silicone. Make sure whatever you use is compatable with rubber. The advantage of using such a sealer is that it lubricates the seal as the sleeve enters then sets later.
