Dexta Cranking problem

Healthy battery will only turn over the dexta a couple of revolutions and then nothing. The starter motor gets hot. It doesnt seem to matter which battery terminal is used as earth. The throw gear on the starter doesnt bottom out on the end casing of the housing. The dexta has a solinoid with a button underneath it. When this is pressed the starter winds over nice & freely although of course the starter gear isnt engaged into the flywheel. Anyone got any ideas? Cheers in advance.

Sounds like the battery even tho being good is either too small or you have a weak cable.

The copper may have decomposed or corroded the terminals enough to cause that problem.

Low amp supply to the battery will cause it to heat.

I use a 1050 amp battery in my S-Dexta and it cranks fine at 20*F with no glowplug or preheat.

The battery came straight out of the Massey 135 & didnt have any probs starting that unit. I took that bloody starter off & on about four times. Checked for poling...nothing, stripped the mechanical part ( where the lever throws the drive gear out ) ..... nothing, I put the starter in a vise & hooked up a battery & tried to stall the drive cog with a lump of hardwood... that just chewed the wood up , so i figured there wasnt a problem torque wise. Finally i removed every connection ( electrical ) that was in any way connected to the starter system and either cleaned each one to a sparkling finish or replaced it. put the whole thing back together & pulled the lever to see if it would crank. Now bearing in mind that i had replaced the fuel filter & only primed the system as far as the filter, i assumed I would have to crank the engine over whilst cracking open each injector to bleed them before the old girl would start. I pulled the lever & the old girl cranked over at a fair rate of knots for about three revolutions & THEN STARTED !!!!! frightened the bejesus out of me. moral of this saga.... if you push a button, be ready for it to do what it's supposed to do... and check your connections before whining for help.....LOL...cheers for the reply Burrhead. 8^)

I always like to hear good news and am glad it worked out for you.

My son put a new starter in his 2000 Ford pickup and it still would'nt crank. He called me and I went over to check it.

The tester showed full charge in the battery so I told him lets check all the cables at the other end. He says "No way Dad I know they're all good. I just checked them"

He called me in about 2 hours to tell me the starter cable at the selonoid was burned and it was cranking fine now.
