I have just purchased a 1926 Fordson that runs but I can't shift it because the clutch doesn't disingage. With the clutch depressed the gears still grind. Is there an adjustment to the clutch that will solve this problem?

Thanks,
Phil

My '23 Fordson had the same problem. All of the linkage was worn too badly to completely release the clutch. After replacing the worn pins and bushing the worn holes it works perfectly. Hope this helps you.

If it's been sitting very long it sounds like the clutch is stuck.

If you don't have a helper here's how I do it.
Tie the clutch in the fully depressed position with the tranny in hi gear. Now take another tractor or pickup or whatever and rock the tractor back and forth a few times to see if it will release. Sometimes ye have to get pretty rambunctious and snatch the tractor fairly hard.

Just be careful and not let the tractor roll over you when the clutch releases if you go it alone.

Hi,
Thanks for the info but this clutch doesn't appear to be stuck. I have forced it into gear by playing with the throttle and a lot of gear grinding and then when I push the clutch to stop the tractor will almost stop or it will just creep along. It just doesn't fully disingage. I was hoping it may have an adjustment somewhere.

Thanks,
Phil

The Fordson F has a wet multiple disk clutch that unless it was soaked with water and rusted they never freeze up. however the disks do tend to "loose their shape" or ability to seperate enough to get the trans input shat to stop turning. If your tractor is a 1923 or newer there is a transmission brake that is activated when the clutch is depressed. it is possible that it needs to be adjusted. when you remove the belt pulley or foot rest from the right side of the tractor you should see a arm with a set screw and a nut that contacts the clutch fork. I don't have my book in the house right now but a believe there should be 7\16 gap between the arm and set screw. if you adjust this and it still wont release fully you need to rebuild the clutch.
